Do you not remember the Rueben Randle/Deangelo Benton ultimatum that was an ultimatum but not an ultimatum? Benton wanted to go to LSU.

I wasn't paying close attention to recruiting back in 2007. I was still floating around the country after being flooded. Finally i can now pay attention to the important things in life.

Cool, didn't even know 247 was around back then. I remember him ending first on rivals.

While I agree that Les isn't doing badly (by any means), there is a fine line between winning and losing.

I hate bringing up bama.. but
Since 2008 Bama has lost only 4 out of the top 24 in state players.

We've lost twice as many (8 of 24) in the same amount of time with no serious in state threat.

if we had kept Cam and Collins we'd probably be 3-1 against them in the past 4 years instead of 0-4.

More importantly.. They have taken 2 of our top 24 and we've taken none of theirs.

ETA - The hiring of O and Steele may help curb this, and if so, hats off to Les and co.

It looks like rivals didn't release an "official" Louisiana ranking in 2010, but Mathieu ended up the 5th highest Louisiana player in the rivals250. I do remember Mike Scarborough releasing his own rankings and he had Trovon Reed at like 9 or 10 in the state.

Trovon Reed - 6.0 - 4 Star - 46th Nationally
Eric Reid - 5.9 - 4 Star - 90th Nationally
Jordan Allen - 5.9 - 4 Star - 119th Nationally
Ronnie Vinson - 5.8 - 4 Star - 165th Nationally
Tyrann Mathieu - 5.8 - 4 Star - 191th Nationally

We are 1-4 against Alabama in the past 4 years. The record would be better if we would just finish the game. We fumbled at the goal a couple years ago. Then we lost in OT this year. I will agree losing Collins and Robinson are huge. But don't forget we went into other states and took some of their better players in the past few years. Just look at this year, Key, Brown, Tolliver, Teuhema, Okeke, Weathersby, etc. That's just this year.

Why is it that LSU is judged more than any other University on how they do in "their state"? I guess it is because they are unique in that they are the only Major University in such a talent rich football state and I get that, because you cannot say that about any other elite talented states, such as California, Florida, Texas, Alabama, Mississippi.

I would recommend that we take into consideration the players we steal from other states as well and give as uch credit for "stealing" those players as LSU gets ragged on for "losing" their instate players.

For example: If Ole Miss "stole" Patterson from LSU and Texas A&M "stole" Speedy Noil From LSU then- LSU "stole" Kevin Toliver from Flordia St.? and stole Clifton Garrett from Illinois? Did LSU steal Toby Weathersby from Texas or A&M?

At the end of the day it really doesnt matter where they got the player from so long as they have addressed their needs.

Pretty positive Mauti was not the best player in the state that year. Went to school and grew up with him. Great player but not top 2 in the state

man 2008 was a bad year. terrible team, and no talent in the state.
Chris Tolliver LSU (was ranked ahead of Mauti)
Michael Mauti PSU(dad and brother wen there, so we didn't have a chance, and only guy that amounted to anything)
Chase Clement LSU
Luther Ambrose ULM
Robby Green Bama
Jerico Nelson Arkansas

You forgot pretty much the entire destrahan team that murdered everyone that year.

Got Nelson. JEfferson Molton Johnson were pretty good players in HS.

But yeah 08 wasn't the best.

I'm good friends with Mauti. And he was always going to Penn st like you said. He told me during his recruitment if lsu called earlier it might have helped but probably wouldn't have changed anything. He really liked venebles and OU and that was his second choice.

Anyway lsu gets LA talent. Not much to this thread

He was #3 on 247 (ETA: and the OP is accurate, 247 had him #3 on their internal, but #7 on their top listing - the "composite" ranking, in-state). I do not believe he had a state ranking from Rivals or ESPN - certainly he was behind Reed and Reid (and probably others) by both of those services.

Wasn't Chad Jones the top player in the state one year or maybe #2 behind Joe McKnight?

He was the consensus #1 safety in the nation and a 5* guy so it sure seems like he would have been top 2.

If you say Shea Patt isn't from Louisiana over and over and over it makes you feel better about him going to ole miss instead of LSU.

Or you can just say we got the better prospect that has more ties to LA and grew up in the south.

No knock on any of these players, but its pretty clear that you can't win on LA talent alone. Just look at 08. Also the state had down years for half of miles tenure.

Cali, Florida, Texas have enough talent to fill 4+ programs with top talent. LA has most talent per capita. Not the most talent. 2 diff things. Ms has the 2nd most talent per capita, those schools haven't done shite. Because the population is so low they have to grab players else where if they want to be good more than once a decade.
