Although Kanno is my go-to, I've been to Horinoya a few times and it's always been solid. If you're into fancy rolls and trendy crap it is not the place for you. Here's what I recommend:

Ankimo (steamed monkfish liver)
Hamachi Kama (grilled yellowtail neck)
Tarakasuzuke (grilled black cod)
Nuta Ae (seafood salad)

Misozuke black cod is a traditional spin on this dish. I really miss Oden in winter. Shabu Shabu as well.

Agreed. Its traditional stuff is solid, though. I'm no expert, but I like it.

I'll probably get blasted for this, but for "fancy and trendy" and expensive, but with really interesting fresh items received almost daily, I occasionally will go to Chiba. Decent cocktails and the food is well prepared. I certainly get that some people hate it.

I've enjoyed Chiba the few times I've been. Love the oyster shooters.

I'm grabbing my first Izzo's burrito at parade time tonight.
