Well, they're not a pop band - his voice was great for that heavy, post-Grunge era music.

I agree and understand why people think he has a good/great voice, just not what I like.. Kinda the same reason I don't really care for LZ, don't like Plant's voice...

Eddie Vedder's voice is awesome to imitate when I wanna annoy the ever living shite out of the missus... Lemon Yellow Sun...

I absolutely LOVE both AiC and Soundgarden.

Alice in Chains is the better band and even today's band without Layne is really good. Jerry Cantrell is responsible for the AiC sound.

That said, Chris Cornell is one of the great vocalists, especially in the hard rock/grunge/metal genre. IMO he has the best scream in music history.

Both bands are light years ahead of Nirvana.

If you like heavy music and you don't dig classic Alice In Chains, to me, you're not a trustworthy human being.

Sap; Dirt; Jar of Flies....all masterpieces.

I never had a problem with Soundgarden other than the fact that they kind of became bloated as they got more popular.

Soundgarden was a really good band with a great singer & decent songs but they were extremely boring live. I had all of their albums but they never did it for me live after seeing them twice.

Alice in Chains is one of the most underrated rock bands of all time. There was nobody else who could duplicate Layne Staley's voice & their songs were so dark & haunting. They actually moved you. Facelift & Dirt are two completely different albums that were both amazing. You could feel Layne's drug issues especially in the lyrics on Dirt & it hit you like a hammer while listening. I really wish I could have seen them live.

If you haven't read about the last days of Layne Staley you should. He weighed under 100 pounds when he was found dead(He was over 6ft) & had been dead for over 2 weeks in his condo when he was found. Very sad that he just could not beat heroin.

AIC all day. Cornell is one of the all time Great lead singers but Alice in chains were a better band as a whole. Mad season was great also.

Jars of Flies for the win. The harmony and sound of AIC was one of a kind.

AIC. So thrashy.

ETA: I hate when they get lumped in with the "grunge" genre. I like grunge, but just because they were from Seattle doesn't mean they put anything out like Nirvana or Pearl Jam.
