re: So if you make $4 million dollars per home game against an OOC foe...

The one thing that they didn't tell you is that it cost about 2 million as well to travel the team, band, and it's entourage. So that's only a net income of about 2 million. I
Link? The team is put in hotels for home games too and have their meals provided.

. I found it appalling that the university choses to dilute the at home schedule to travel away for a game.

Except When LSU has to travel to Wisky to return the trip, LSU gets 500,000 instead of 4,000,000 leaving a gaping hole in the Athletic budget that year. SO yes there really is an argument.
That isn't true according to the recent Advocate article
quote:
The Tigers are set to receive $2.1 million for their second neutral site game against Wisconsin in 2016 at Lambeau Field.
There are pros besides direct money, also LSU make more on that deal than they would a home/away IMO:
quote:
Why? It helps grow LSU’s brand to a national audience, makes the school a ton of money and boosts the recruitment of students and student-athletes, Ausberry said.
“The world has changed,” Ausberry said. “Everybody says LSU’s brand is already big. I say, ‘Yeah, but you can’t ever stop growing.’ You either get better or worse every day. You’ve got to keep working on that brand.”
The money is a big part as well.
LSU will make a combined $5.4 million from the two-game deal with Wisconsin.
And we make it up for it with our next 2 neutral site games:
quote:
LSU will make nearly $9 million from its two most recently scheduled neutral site games, according to game contracts obtained by The Advocate.
ESPN will pay LSU $4 million for a game against BYU in Houston in 2017, and the Tigers will get a whopping $4.75 million from the network for the game against Miami in Arlington, Texas, in 2018.

I would rather attend an LSU game in Houston or Dallas or some other neutral site against a tough opponent than see LSU pound some cupcake in Baton Rouge.
The two aren't mutually exclusive. Just play real games at home, rather than the body bag games. If they do this, LSU's average profit for game goes up, and they aren't cutting $750,000+ checks for the visitors to come in to Tiger Stadium.
I really don't understand the point of expanding TS
if it will only be full once or twice a year. Tiger Stadium and Camp Randall are supposed to be two of the most iconic stadiums in college football, yet the almighty dollar is preventing the games from being played there.
I get a once in a blue moon neutral site game--Oregon in 2011 was awesome, Tennessee is playing at Bristol Motor Speedway, the Northwestern game at Wrigley was great to watch, but having one every, single, year is ridiculous.

Seriously we needed to Schedule Syracuse as a Home and Away? We cant get such a shite team to come play in TS without a return trip?

You can't have it both ways. Let's say LSU could magically create a schedule that played 1 or 2 of the best teams from the other Power 5 conferences every year. We'd always have only 7 home games because we'd always be returning a trip to the Okalhomas, Florida States, UCLA's of the world. You can't get top flight teams to come play in Baton Rouge without going back to their place. It just doesn't happen.
That's why the neutral site games are such a big hit with all the schools. They get to play the tougher matchups without having to guarantee a return anywhere.
So we would rather play AT Syracuse than Miami? Wouldn't Miami benefit LSU WAY more in recruiting?

Also, like it or not but the local economy is impacted by a smaller home slate.
Like it or not, the LSU AD is not in the business of providing profit for the local BR economy--that is a by-product of LSU football. Nonetheless, one could argue that without LSU athletics many of these local businesses would not exist in the first place.
Bottom line: if 1 or 2 days of lost revenue per year has such a significant impact on one's business survival or profit than that business owner has bigger issues to worry about.

The comparison is between two neutral site games and a home-and-home series.
2 neutral site games earns LSUAD $8-9Million.
Home-and-home earns LSUAD about $4.5 million. That is because LSUAD only gets $500K in the year we would play at the other campus.
This.
Plus, the university gets a lot of publicity in cities it recruits OOS students. You can't ignore that the football program is at the doorstep of most universities

You're assuming it was an option. Miami may not have been willing to make the return trip.
Schedule making is a two-way street.
I don't make it to as many LSU games as I used to, but when I was going regularly I would have loved to see Wisconsin, TCU, Miami, Oregon come to Tiger Stadium. But that's not the way the business works right now.

4 million per OOC home game? that math just doesn't add up, imo.
there has to be some netting out to reach that low of a figure. LSU gets the ticket sales, concessions and parking and media revenue. I can see the media revenue being higher at a neutral site due to the national nature of the telecast and the quality opponent but still LSU has to make a lot more than 4 mil. for a home cupcake game.
I don't know the avg ticket price (no TAF) for a game but I would think it would be $75 at least.
100,000 at $75 equals 7 and a half million.
add luxury box revenue
add concession revenue
add parking revenue
looks reasonable to me that LSU could gross 8 to 10 million for each game in Tiger Stadium, not counting TV revenues which are split by the SEC anyway. I just don't see the expenses for a home game being 4 to 6 million.
so 4 million bucks (sans TV) seems real low.

I hated it when the neutral site trend began to take hold. College football games should be held on college campuses. They should be held in the local area of one of the competing schools so local merchants can benefit.
They're basically pre-season bowl games. It's probable the schools would stick to Cupcake U. if these neutral site deals were not put together for commercial appeal.

We are making only about 2mil more for the neutral site games. I under stand the business model and what makes the football program more money, but I'd assume the community is losing way more than that.
Factor in all the part time workers at stadium, cops doing extra detail, restaurants, bars, hotels, cabs, uber. All losing out on big paydays. casinos not getting the in flux of out of towners, gas stations, grocery stores. The list goes on. All those things would see an increase in revenue on game weekends.

This is true, but business go up and around the campus because of this. They aren't relying on broke college students to make the payday, they are relying on the 30% increase of sales in the fall directly related to the football games.

What businesses are you talking about?

You sure our band is going to Lambeau Field? Wisconsin band didn't go to Houston. Our full band doesn't travel very much anymore.

For those who don't believe the actually cost associated with a nutural site game. It's the exact same model as a bowl game. Team gets a payout but they charge the school for tickets.

Did you even read the article you posted?
And no, it isn't set up exactly like a bowl game. For one, the tickets are cheaper. Also, we haven't had any problem selling out our allotment.
Second, they bus the band to Houston and back while they have to pay for an entire week of hotels, food, etc for the players and the band.

It is the loss of 1 home game---and if a business is banking on their survival one 8 home games instead of 7 each year that business is in trouble.

why is Wisconsin so special that we agreed to play in Green Bay but they wouldn't play in the Superdome? sorry Houston and Dallas but if we are playing there then let's say we play a neutral site game against Wisconsin. it should be in any other stadium in B1G country like Soldier Field or the Vikings' new one to be fair

LSU addressed it. Nola hasn't offered enough money, but LSU wants a kickoff game there
