My crowning movie for jack is a tie between the shining and one flew over..
He sorta strayed away from the jackness in "the pledge", which had potential to be a great film, executed poorly though.

Chinatown and The Departed are very slight variations. The others are identical. But he plays his one note very well.

DDL
Duvall
Hopkins
Freeman
Nicholson (I think he's super overrated)

I think DDL is just in another league than anyone in the business. Guy is golden.

this would be my list of the 5. Jack isn't a great actor but has been in some amazing movies.

Just curious, for those ranking Hopkins so high - why?
He has The Silence of the Lambs (granted, an all-time great performance), but apart from that I can't think of much.

Lewis is getting a lot of love on the MB. I almost made the list consist of
Johnny Depp
Michael Keaton
Gary Oldman
Sean Penn
Edward Norton
I would go:
Norton, Oldman, Penn, Keaton, Depp with this list. I am a big Norton and Oldman fan while Penn and Keaton are both very solid actors. I am biased against Depp since I can't stand his weirdo schtick.

Hopkins as Lector in general was brilliant work. He was also really good in the Edge, Meet Joe Black and Nixon. If he had more good movies to fall back on, I would rank him higher. The dude is good in everything he does, I liked him as Oden in Thor, Bailey in RED 2 and Vega in Zorro.

I would take 1970's Jack over any of them. DDL (who is fantastic) gets too much love for the few films he has done. IMO, if he did as much work as the others, he would have a few more 'stinkers' on his resume.
Speaking of his films of the '70's, as great as Jack was in Cuckoo's Nest, The Last Detail and Five Easy Pieces were my favorite roles.

Ever seen Titus?

That's a tough question, because there's a huge quality gap between some of these actors' best and worst roles. I'll give it a shot, though.
Numbers 1 and 2 are easy:
1. DDL
2. Nicholson
After that, it gets tricky:
3. Duvall (although he's fallen off in a major way over the past 20 or so years)
4. Hopkins
5. Freeman
I'd switch Nicholson and DDL, but this is good. They are in a tier by themselves. I'd say Freeman is far below Hopkins too. A tier all to himself.
Nicholson is underrated, even by some folks who recognize him as a good or very good actor.

This. Jack at his peak is one of the best. DDL will probably get there, but I'll give it to the old guy now.

DDL is so overrated on this board it's actually comical.
Got to show up for work more than once every 3 years to be taken seriously. But yes, DDL is a great pinch hitter. We all remember the homerun, but try to play everyday like all star actors.
