DDL

(DDL and Freeman are wonderful actors and may even be better for either a very specific charater - DDL - or a realistic normal character - Freeman - than the top 3 - but - my top 3 have more range and broader application)
A proplem with your list, though, other than DDL - the other 4 are roughly the same age - Duvall born in 1931, with Nicholson, Hopkins and Freeman all born in 1937. DDL was born in 1957.

And with no disrespect intended to the other 4, the gap between DDL and the rest is considerable.

DDL is a great actor, but the resume is, what, 6 movies? So, taking his top 3 (Hawkeye, Bill the Butcher and Plainview) versus Duvall's top 3 (Kilgore, Hagen and, yes, TV, Gus McRae) - Duvall is easily holding his own there, although, to be fair to DDL, he's leading in 2/3 of his great performances, and Duvall is in support for 2/3.
BUT, once we get into Duvall's "next" tier, Network, Great Santini (some argue his greatest role), Tender Mercies, The Apostle, A Civil Action - it's easy to see him closing the gap with a quantity of quality, over DDL's excellence in just a handful of films.
Now, with Hopkins - his reputation (much like DDL for Bill the Butcher) is strongly anchored, in U.S. cinema, anyway, by his Hannibal Lector in Silence of the Lambs - although, he is another one of "those guys" who would surprise you more with a mediocre performance, than by an outstanding one.
Nicholson has such a larger than life persona - it is tough to remember back when he was just a great, great actor. 12 acting nominations is a resume he shouldn't have to defend.
But, we could throw in a few others - Michael Caine, or dead guys like Bogey, Tracy, Brando, Olivier and the gap between DDL and them wouldn't be "considerable" - to suggest such is just engaging in hyperbole.

Nobody suggested Caine, Bogart, or Brando.
Just ranking the 5 presented.
I am a huge fan of Duvall, but he simply does not take over a film as strongly as DDL, IMHO.

Was that the standard? Arnold takes over all of his films.
And, have you seen The Great Santini? Lonesome Dove (I know, television, but this is one of those exceptions, I would think)? His performance dwarfs the production in both those cases - and Tommy Lee Jones was in Lonesome Dove.
Easily as dominant in Great Santini as DDL is in GONY and about equal to There Will Be Blood.

I've seen Santini, and all the others you mentioned.
I think his strongest performance was in The Apostle (at least that was my favorite).
But when I think of DDL in Gangs, My Left Foot, TWBB, In the Name of the Father, Last Of the Mohicans- I'm far more impressed.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Chinatown, The Departed, The Shining, A Few Good Men. Off the top of my head, I'd say those are Jack's best performances; and each of those roles is completely different.
This is a pretty good list - and while they're different, they're still Jack, too. His off-screen persona is alike another character he plays.
Again, I think Jack is a victim of his own success - much the same way Hanks' great performances are sandwiched by the "real" Tom Hanks and the relatively unsophisticated nature of his early work (Bosom Buddies, Bachelor Party, Splash) - people forget he's a helluva good actor - that run from Philadelphia to Castaway rivals almost any 7 year period for any actor - and I mean, Grant, Stewart, Bogey, Tracy, Jack, Duvall, Brando, DDL - anybody.
But, I digress.

His performances in the departed, the shining, and ofotcn were pretty similar.

Seems to me at this level the difference really comes down to taste.

I was gonna put DDL first put Nicholson's work in the 70s trumps all.
