Birdman was a disappointment

The staging and direction were clever. Sadly, the dialogue was anything but, and in such a claustrophobic production that's a fatal flaw. The guy behind me did laugh at Ed Norton's erection, but I wasn't so inclined. The manifold relationship problems seemed included just so that the movie could have something, anything to include within the proceeding. I like literate people movies, but the scene where Sam told her father that he needs to get over his lack of importance was embarrassingly phony.
The ending was also silly mess... Birdman? Really? Pardon me if I wasn't impressed with the metaphor and obviousness of either the title or subtitle of the film.

I wasn't a fan either.
But I feel like I probably didn't get it. Will probably watch again to confirm.

I wanted to like it. This board seemed to love it.
I couldn't get into it though.

Didn't like the ending, but enjoyed the movie. I liked that it was different, and I wasn't sure if he really had powers or if it was just in his head.
Thought Keaton and Norton were great, and I did laugh at the erection.
But the ending was a letdown for me.

No, you got it. This was Hollywood trying to convince us how hard acting is by reducing everything to acting, a story be damned.

I've only seen it once so far, but I did like it and will probably enjoy it more the second time. Not really what I was expecting, but it had its moments. Not really sure why it's nominated for as many awards as I've heard, but the tension between the characters was well done.

It took three tries for me to watch it. I appreciated it as a technical marvel. The story boarding had to be an unreal endeavor, as well as the actor's commitment. It achieved a real unique feel and originality.
But it's like a drug you have to be in the mood and have the time to do. Also, the drumset score wore me the hell out after 20mins.

"All About Eve" is my standard for this type of film, and that film at least had terrific dialogue. Birdman is just dull pretentiousness.

My favorite movie so far this year.

I haven't seen it but I find a lot of the movies that the critics and academy rave about fall flat with me.

2nd best movie of the year after Boyhood. Disagree with pretty much your entire assessment, but to each his own.

By what measure? Do you mean that you enjoyed it more than all but one other film?
It was logistically impressive, to be sure, and Keaton is always great. Most of the personal stories, however, did nothing to advance the storyline of the birdman. The lesbian encounter, for example, was entirely gratuitous. Yeah, I got it... it was an allusion to Mulholland Drive.. the inside jokes didn't make for a cohesive whole. And then the ending mocked the previous 100 minutes... if we were supposed to believe that the flight didn't happen in real time then it contradicted the point of the non-cut linear filmmaking.

I wasn't a huge fan either.
Whiplash and Boyhood were the best two I saw this year.

I haven't even wanted to see it. The previews are weird.
I'm on the fence.
