When I posted about this a couple of hours ago, not sure where that thread went, someone chimed in claiming "personal knowledge" that the player gave those items away and there was no crime. Not sure where he went.

It will be dropped to a Misdemeanor and he will get probation. Under the value for a felony. Hats off to that guy.?

If I lease a car and give it to someone else, is that illegal?

No, it's not illegal on its own, without some additional things happening. Defaulting on a lease contract isn't theft. Don't play lawyer and quote statutes if you don't know how they work, and when they apply.

As for the equipment, it's only a "lease" if the players are providing some sort of payment or other consideration in exchange for the equipment. I think he meant (or should have just said) the equipment remains team property.

I'm this case, it would be giving the car to a friend to sell and potentially share the profits, while going back to the dealership and asking for a new car at no additional cost because you lost the other one.

I'm also not a lawyer, so you'll have to tell me if that would be considered a crime.

Playing on the team would be the payment or other consideration in this case. Lease works in this case.

Players dont own any equipment. Its owned by the university. I was an athlete & everyone knows u cannot sell anything, as its not yours. Shoes/gloves are no different than jerseys. Use them, but dont sell them. Ohio St had a scandel similiar to this w T Pryor & jerseys/autographs i believe.

Yes its a crime. Selling something that is not yours is illegal. Making this worse, every student athlete at LSU has been thru multiple compliance trainings covering this very topic. Knowing you cannot sell them makes it worse. Stealing. Period.

university can make money off of a player.
NCAA can make money off of a player.
Equipment companies can make money off of a player.
Video game companies can make money off of a player.
A player cannot make any money off of himself.

The equipment more than likely was not stolen, players keep gear all the time, NCAA just forbids them from selling it, or trading it for tattoos. the university probably found out the about the selling of the shoes, then declared it stolen in the case that the players name did come out. In an effort to keep the player eligible with the NCAA. All they are doing is shifting the blame, simple diversionary tactics.

Yes, it would be illegal on it's own. This isn't a contractual issue where you simply default on payment or return the car in disrepair. This is intentionally depriving someone of the ownership of a thing by intentionally giving it to another to possess.

You don't know it all.

This thread just goes to show you that LSU fans are no better than those they hate... If this was at Alabama, Ole Miss, A&M, etc... there would be outrage that this guy isn't giving up the player, because he should be punished for breaking NCAA rules. However, because its an LSU player, people are supporting the guy for not snitching and protecting the player
