Still waiting on my return from 2013

Long story short my wife passed away at the beginning of 2014 and I had to quit my offshore job to raise my then 2 year old daughter alone. I filed the return like normal with turbotax and followed the instructions to file married joint. I called after the 21 days checking on my refund and something was wrong. Since then I have received four notices saying the department needs an additional 45 days to research my case? Here I sit at the beginning of this year and still no return. I have called at least 10 times and each time I wait on hold for over an hour just for them to tell me there is nothing they can do and I have to let the process play out. Is there anything I can do? Should I be paid extra interest for them holding my return for so long? Lawyer up? I'm fed up and looking for answers, please help.

Man, I don't have the answer to your question but I'm so sorry for your loss. I couldn't imagine being in your situation. God bless you and I'm sending prayers your way.

I would call a CPA or even a tax attorney for more information. You will get a much more informative answer.
And sorry for your loss, this run around probably has to be the least of your concerns at this time.

I can't really give you any helpful advice with your situation but just so you will use the correct term in the future if you call the IRS again, you're not waiting on your "return."
You have filed your return. That's the paperwork that TurboTax prepares for you.
You are waiting for your "refund."
If you tell the IRS when you call that you're waiting for your return, there's really no telling what they think your situation is. Not that it should stop you from getting your refund but just so you know.
Good luck fighting the IRS. It's very frustrating.
Sorry for your loss of your wife.

Man, God Bless.
I would suggest seeing a Tax Attorney. I have a recommendation if you need one.

KMA, jerk.
I know what he meant but I don't know if the IRS is smart enough to know. That was my point. There's no need to give the IRS any excuse to not understand the situation if he calls them again.
Now go smoke one of your Marlboro Lights and get cancer. Thanks.

I think his point was that the dumb mfers working at the IRS help desk might get confused, although we all know what he means.

They didn't give a reason for something being wrong the first time you called? They will usually pay interest from 4/15/14 thought issuance of the refund, but that's hardly consolation.

quote:Good question. I assumed he meant the IRS but he did use the word "department" which means it could be the state revenue department holding up his refund.
Federal or State?
Heaven help him if it's the La. State Dept of Revenue. They are worse than the IRS when it comes to losing returns and asking for information that they have already been given.

They said that sometimes when this kind of thing happens that they have to do research to make sure that it is not fraud. I filed HoH in 2012 because it helped get the max refund, but filed jointly in 2013 for the same reasons. Thank you all for your condolences.
This is for a federal refund and yes they do have a bunch of jackasses that work there. I was told three different answers the first few times I called them.
And yes I know it is a refund, sorry for the confusion.

quote:My only suggestion is make sure you write down the employee number they give you as they answer the phone when you call them. Even repeat it back to them to let them know you're writing it down. (I don't think they refer to it as their "employee number." Maybe "ID number"??? )
I was told three different answers the first few times I called them.
It's too late for the first calls you've made but I did learn that if you can tell them who you spoke with previously they seem to pay more attention in helping you.
They know you have them identified and they can't deny speaking with you if there is any legal action taken.
Good luck.

It's time to call the Taxpayer Advocate. They are created for situations just like this - where there is a hardship and IRS foolishness isn't getting anything accomplished.
Call 1-877-777-4778. Explain to them your situation. Give them the full rundown, soup to nuts.
Don't call the local office - call the national number.
I'm sorry for your loss and for all this stuff you are going through. Without knowing more than you told me, I'm guessing this has been tagged as an identity theft issue - especially with your wife deceased. The IRS is way overwhelmed with identity theft issues right now.
Also... did you receive your state refund?

I can't solve your problem, but I do know one is never given more than they can handle. I also know entitled bureaucrats many times do not seem to care, or exhibit empathy.
Your thread makes me angry. I'm sorry about your situation, but you will make it through this. "They" however will one day not survive because of arrogance, entitlement and possibly a revolution.
