Spinoff: What should constitute manliness?

The thread on TheRedPill had me thinking about what we consider to be desired male behavior in our society. What personality traits should the theoretical alpha male possess? What traits are most beneficial to society as a whole? Is the post-industrialized world better with the ideal man being timid and subservient to a wise "TV Mom" (think Jill Taylor, Carrie Heffernan or Debra Barrone)?

the 2 big ones are confidence and rational aggression

You're the king of the overzealous spinoff thread.

Honor, commitment, integrity.
Simply put, doing the right thing, even when you don't want to.

I don't have the time for this today.
I did my final project in college on Female Masculinity, which I devoted a massive portion to defining masculinity in general. I have primary sources out the arse, and they're ridiculously interesting.
Remind me of this on a day other than NYE, DAMNIT!

There are plenty of lists shared around the Internet that have tasks a man should be able to complete. I normally hate those damn lists but some I have seen are pretty accurate.
Even for a modern city dweller, there are some tasks (i.e. start a camp fire) that men should be able to complete. Being down in NOLA during Katrina, I really saw those that would survive in an apocalyptic world and those that were truly helpless.

I didn't graduate in Women's and Gender Studies, if that's what you're thinking. This was in a Critical Theory course.
Best class I took in college, actually
But my point was just that I have a lot of nifty info OP might be interested in. But I leave work in :02!

I've known plenty of confident, rationally aggressive males that were complete failures as men.
Not surprising that this board will struggle with the definition...

Have a dick, like boobs and drive a truck. That's about it.

Those are good traits, but without the qualities I mentioned, they won't make you a man.
