The adult male will mature only when he's exhausted all other options.

T or F?
I heard this on NPR this weekend, but I had just turned the station and didn't get what it's in reference to. My dad and I got s kick out of it. He paid for the grand majority of my 8 years at LSU, so I just basically laughed and left it at that.
As a father of a son I wonder what I can do to speed up this process when the time comes. I probably won't be able to afford him 8 years of college to figure it all out.

Why were you listening to Never Patriotic Radio?

It's kinda true much of the time.
In the old days, people were going to work out of high school, getting married, and having kids before they turned 20. Why? Because they had to.
The economy has made such a lifestyle unnattractive, and the federal government has made the "slacker" lifestyle easy and comfortable. Why mature when you don't have to?

I graduated twice, but I studied a different field in grad school. I was grown up when it was over though, moved out west and started work before the ceremony even happened.

F.
Social norms and expectations have something to do with it.

I'll never get to retire though.

So, you consider graduating and getting a job maturing?
Posted on 12/29/14 at 11:18 am to Gaston
the exception to this rule is if the male A.is not lazy and B.he finds what he believes is the "best option he will ever have"

You're comparing me to someone who took 8 years to graduate? I had my career planned out by 6th grade. Went to UNO on a top 10 scholarship (full tuition plus they paid for my car stereo and rims), got into dental school after 3 years of college (no summers - just 6 regular semesters, and still got my degree), and was the youngest in my class at dental school. I'm the definition of maturity.

No, I matured at some point in there...on the cusp between wandering around and putting in 2+ all nighters a week studying enough to graduate in physics. It wasn't as easy as I thought it would be for me and there were many 'come to Jesus' moments that pushed me toward maturity. Slowly, painfully...I also made a few friends who got me into climbing...that had a parallel effect to instill the 'giving up, failing, is not an option' part of maturity.
I moved to San Fran with my gf, wife of 12 years now, and left every security blanket and person that we knew. That wasn't the moment of maturity but a product of it.

I think he's comparing our awkward message board personalities.

Considering the normal male known to the NPR employees....not surprised...
I don't want to go back to a draft, but you want to see some people grow up quick...run their rear ends through two years in the miliary...

You get 4 years of college. If you can't graduate by then, you pay for it yourself.
