re: $20 mil Over to $20 mil Under the Cap in 3 Easy Steps(and Lose Only 3 Players)

Brees will be 38 when the 2017 season starts, so he'd do better taking an extension with guaranteed money this year than rolling the dice looking for $20 mil+ at 38.
So yes he has a HUGE incentive to get an extension.

Like I said earlier, if he's not willing to do a Brady like deal ($15 million per year), let him play out his contract. I think it's worth the risk the Saints take vs. the risk Brees takes.
ETA: I do not think the Saints should do it at $20 million/year because that just puts them in an even worse position later.

Salary Cap Calculator
Plus learning about the cap and ways to tinker with it over the last two years.
I haven't even talked about turning base salary into signing bonus yet, which was a trick we used often at least 3 years in a row prior to last year. We decided to actually do cuts instead last year.

Whether it's what either side wants is another matter. I think we'll see a 3 year extension, with the guarantees being more important than the salary. He'll likely see $30-$40 mil guaranteed if he does a 3 year extension.

Poor choice of words on my part. Brees has no incentive to do a deal that is more friendly to the Saints. If he wants $20 million average I would just let him play out his contract. If he wants to do something for the team, then we can talk.
That is what I meant by lack of incentive.
ETA: I do not see him doing $75 million/5 years, $40 million guaranteed.

Brady's deal is fully guaranteed, that is the only reason why brady took it. Times are different and contracts change based on the salary cap. In 2012, the salary cap was 123mil, a 9mil contract was 7.3% of the salary cap, and many people applauded Brady for taking that deal because it meant security for him from injury and gave his team leeway to sign players.
In 2015, the salary cap is projected 140-145mil and Brees plays the copycat game enough to know its time for him to extend. The question is, where and how much will he extend, but most likely it'll be a 3yr deal. Now the question is the number, I say its a 3yr/45mil FULLY guaranteed contract. That potentially shifts his 26.4 and 27.4 mil cap hit the next two years to about 19.76mil/yr on average. We know the Saints will backload it as well, so it'll be closer to 16mil this year, 18mil next year, and 22mil the last 3. Effectively, we just reduced our cap hit 10mil this year alone.
The question becomes, if he wants 3yr/60mil, we're looking at somewhere around 22.76mil/yr of cap hits left and it'll be reduced to 18 for 2015, 20 for 2016, and 24-25mil for the last 3.

I can see that, but the "average" doesn't matter. That's liquid and we can find ways(such as void years) to lessen the hit. It's the guarantees that will be important.
While Brady's deal was team friendly, it was also heavily guaranteed. Given Brees' age he will be looking more for guarantees than caring about "salary status".
Edit:
Pretty much the stuff htran said too.

If the Saints ride out next season with Brees current contract/cap hit, he'll have limited leverage after the 2015 season. His cap hit if cut is just $7.4 Million, and it would save $20 Million against the cap, which likely will be reasonable enough money to get a mid to mid-upper tier QB.
It's also why the Saints should make a legitimate attempt to think about drafting a QB this year (maybe in the 2nd or 3rd round) if value is there.
They have no leverage with Ryan Griffin or McCown, and while Brees has been great, the team has to start looking to the future rather than looking to this team being a complete contender the next few years. The chances of getting an Andrew Luck is miniscule and the Saints don't have a defense that will be able to work with a Russell Wilson type.

So there you have it. We cut only 3 players and saved $41.75 mil with all of these moves, taking us from about $20 mil over the cap to about $20 mil under.
I hope your right, but I don't its as simple as your making it.

It is. I made a thread last year before free agency showing some of the same things. We were between $15-20 mil over last year too and we still signed Byrd, Graham, Galette, and several other (cheaper) FAs.

Is this serious? It doesn't matter how much money you have, you aren't signing a franchise qb in free agency.

No.
Its not serious at all.
Still waiting for one from gurt.

If this solution is so easy... Someone just link this thread to Loomis. Let the droppings do his job. Or better yet pay bonethug his salary and let Loomis walk too. Superbowl 2015!

Dude. Bone IS Loomis. Geez pay attention

So we are set with stills and cooks? Because those are the only two worth keeping. The rest can go.

There are no QBs in the draft that really stand out this year. That is another reason Brees has so much leverage. If Brees cared about the team he would accept a Brady type contract (even if it's "fully guaranteed") but I do not think he gives a rat's arse about the team.

Where are these numbers coming from? I do not see the NFL increasing the cap by that much. I still remember all the trouble from the "no cap year" that came back to bite a couple teams.

It's only easy because Loomis set it up that way. It's easy to play with numbers that are there. Knowing how to set them up and how it all fits together in the big picture and in future years is very important.
Also there is the actual negotiations and trying to get these things in there.
Looking at a bad GM, the former Panthers GM made several bad contracts that are basically impossible to get out of. I looked at the numbers and there is no way to fix a lot of that.
Loomis does a great job of setting up the flexibility so we can do the things I'm saying.
