which brings up a different question: what exactly do you want out of a GM?
Loomis is a master at manipulating the cap and setting up contracts. but his evaluations during the draft have been very subpar.
how do we get better on draft day if our GM is just pretty much specializes in the cap?

you think its mickey doing the evaluations?

he hires and evaluates his scouts. everything eventually leads back up to him. the GM gets the credit and the blame for most drafts. hes responsible at some point, whether it be he directly or his hires beneath him.

better scouts.
Loomis is a bean counter that uses the potential future cap increase to his advantage. The only problem arises when he gives contracts to certain players in a great year and their play declines (Harper and Smith).
Other than that, the way we are going into 2015 free agency, it is actually very flexible.
160.5mil cap hit
Restructure:
Jr Galette -> 150.035mil
Jimmy Graham -> 145.165mil
Jairus Byrd -> 139.261mil
Curtis Lofton -> 135.142mil (After 2015, extend him)
Cut:
Jahri Evans -> 129.142mil (lose 5mil in dead cap)
David Hawthorne -> 126.152mil (lose 3mil in dead cap)
Rafael Bush -> 124.202mil (lose 0 in dead cap)
Extend:
Drew Brees 3yr/45mil (5mil signing bonus)
2015 and 2016 base salary 10mil, prorated bonus 8.4mil (18.4mil cap hit from 26.4mil)
2017-2019 base salary 19.5mil, prorated bonus 1.0mil (20.5mil cap hit)
116.202mil after Brees' extension; 23.798 mil cap space if the cap is 140mil
seriously all of that and we have 23.8mil to play with. still not counting the possibilities with Colston, Grubbs, Bunkley, and Cam Jordan w/ an extension
23.8mil
Re-sign Ingram to a 4yr/16mil contract (for ease -3mil since we backload)
Re-sign PRob to a 2yr/6mil contract (for ease -2mil since we backload)
18.8mil left:
Mike Iupati (G) top 5 guard averages 7.67mil salary.
- He is 27, arguably a top 5 guard, a 5yr/40mil contract seems to be in order. Lets say we hit about 4mil of cap hit this year
14.8mil left:
BJ Raji (DT)
- If we're playing a 3-4, we need a true NT. Enter BJ Raji who anchored GB's defense before his injury. I'm honestly not sure what his worth is. He signed a 1yr/4mil contract, he wanted 8mil/yr annually before his injury. Somewhere I think he can get a 2yr/10mil easily. For ease lets say 4mil cap hit this year
10.8mil left
Still can look at players like Brandon Graham, Chris Culliver, and Perrish Cox.
Not sure where the FO goes though, this FA class seems rather weak at solid starters, but very loaded at top tier players (Suh, D. Thomas, J. Thomas, D. Bryant, etc.)

U didn't address cam Jordan, he's carrying a near 7 mill cap number, if extended will that number likely decrease a bit?
Posted on 12/23/14 at 9:03 pm to Chad504boy
I've considered that possibility but it may help us to wait for two reasons.
First he would be making about half of what he might average per year on the open market and anytime you can get a break you should take it.
Second, he might have another "subpar" year which would certainly lower his cost. On the flip side of that another good year could cost us overall.

I don't even know what his contract would or could be now. But u are right, waiting him playing a contract year could make us overpay, hate overpaying de's

We are not cutting evans. Trade is the only possibility.

Um we can trim 8.5 cutting Evans, he's a goner or needs to take a big paycut

I guess crazy things can happen... but 6 pro bowls in a row usually has a value...

The crazy thing is that he made the Pro Bowl the last 2 seasons. He's making it on his name alone...he was subpar last year and this year has been terrible. His body is worn down and he's done. He shouldn't be here next year.

I like everything about what you posted except for this. Raji has been a bust since his rookie year. I think that money could be better used elsewhere.

I put it in there if we're "committed" to a 3-4.
I personally rather not sign him, but I like the potential value. he can eat space.

I think Terrance Knighton could end up being a good signing for us. I would be cool with him coming at a similar rate that Bunkley did for 5 years/$25mil.

I really don't see them being concerned about the Dline enough to go out and get a big FA, and I don't think they add anyone more than a depth player at that spot.
Is anyone we bring in really going to start over Jordan, Hicks, or Galette? Maybe someone could rotate with Jenkins if we cut Bunkley but it's no guarantee he's gone. Then we have Edebali, Walker, and Foster as young backups.
I only see them going after a NT/big DE in the draft if a good one is sitting there at one of our picks. People are being too over reactionary because of our soft DB play and lack of cover LBs. The talent is there.

I beg to differ, Matt Ryan in both games had all the time in the world to shred us apart.
This DL isn't the same one causing havoc in 2013.

Not that we were great rushing them, but we got 9 hurries and 3 hits on Ryan, plus Galette drew a holding penalty and we made him throw away 3 passes.
Our major issue(same as the first game) was losing contain on Ryan, which is why he had "all day" a few times. That's nothing to do with the rush itself or the players not being good at rushing. That's bad coaching and/or discipline.
Most of their passes were quick release stuff because the corners were off or the zones were too loose(I remember they completed one pattern 3 times in the same exact manner because the underneath man was too shallow, that being Vaccaro on two of them).
If you really look at the difference between this year and last year, it's the safeties. I gave Jenkins a lot of shite for his play(especially his tackling, which he was horrible at), but he at least had the secondary lined up and everyone knew where everyone was going to be.
Just look to the Eagles and how improved their secondary was. It's a shame Jenkins never lived up to that potential here, and that he never tackled well while he was here. I think a lot of that can be blamed on coaching. Everyone knew Jenkins had it in him and that he was smart enough, but he was never able to put it all together here like he has there.
We didn't have that this year with Vaccaro moving to SS, Byrd as a new transfer at FS and then getting hurt, Bush playing FS and getting hurt, and then Warren coming in at FS and Sanford at SS.
The miscommunication and loose coverage/zones is definitely what did us in this year. If you don't give the pass rush time and allow quick passes all game you aren't going to get many sacks.

Despite his statistical output, Jenkins, nor the rest of that Philadelphia secondary was good this year. Injuries and attitude were the reasons ours was so awful this year.

lets not forget bad playcalling in the first few weeks. keep your FA-prized ballhawking safety 40 yards deep.
