Help Training my Pointer

I have absolutely zero experience with training pointers. Picking my girl up Dec. 30th then the fun will begin.
I'm just curious if there are any groups down in south Louisiana that are into bird hunting and training pointers. I'm located in Slidell, but willing to travel.

You don't have to jinx her! I'm sure she's going to have the instincts. Comes from a strong line of hunters.
I'm more interested in training her to hunt with me.

Birds is the key, wild birds are best. They teach the dog how to be a pointer. Pigeons are also great. A well breed dog will come with a ll the natural instincts needed for the pointing point. Teach the dog basics obedience commands but let the dog be a puppy. It will want to please, when it gets to adolescence, the dog will want to tell you F-off. It will think, I am faster than you and you can't catch me. At that point it is collar time...

You have any contact info for this guy? I just looked it up and all I can come up with is a website for bear creek on the bayou kennels that won't work, and an old facebook page that looks like it hasn't been touched since 2010.
ETA: from what I can see he just does Labs. Does he do Pointers too?

He's the only one in the area that I've found that is experienced in training pointers. He's got his own English setters that he runs. I was pleased with the results that we got from my dogs after sending them to him.

You need to look up Tyler Silcox at Alger Flats. I can give you his number or if you do facebook he is on there. I quail hunt with them quite often and his dogs are incredible. They are located in Atmore, AL about a 3 hour drive from Slidell.

2nd this.
They need birds to reinforce their instincts.
Get the basic obedience down pat

Basic obedience as in Heal, Whoa, etc? What commands do you teach? Sit and down may not apply correct?
How do you put them on birds down here? Pigeons?

All the basic commands sit, stay, heal etc. are good to teach. It let's them know to obey and listen to you. It also builds a rapport between you and the dog.
I bought quail from a hatchery in Tenn. but I would not suggest that because the shipping killed a large portion. Checking craigslist you can find bobwhite and even chukar within a couple hours. The non-flight conditioned bobwhites were still able to fly good enough for training.

I had the help of a K9 officer that did private lessons - basically showed us the proper way to train and reinforce the commands - once out GSP completed the basics needed for around the house and in the woods - we started to train with her ecollar - she has been working to train to track deer this season, she is still young but does good but is easily distracted by her nose and drive to point. She won't point a dead deer but anything that is alive during the track gets a good point. She has been a great dog in the woods and an even better family companion.

What do you plan to hunt with the dog?

Ideally, I would like to be able to use her to hunt ducks as well as quail/woodcock. From the research i'm doing it appears I may just be better utilizing her for quail/woodcock. I would love to be able to use her for everything though because quail/woodcock/(maybe even snipe) won't happen as often as duck hunting.

Find the Gun Dog DVD. Very good

From what I have read here and on other forums you will not be happy using your GSP for duck hunting
