My answer probably wouldn't help, but I subscribe to Dish Network only during the 3 months of football season for tailgating. So I use the WATCHESPN app on the Roku during football season for other games.

but with watchESPN don't you have to have basic cable?

I got a WatchESPN username and password from a close friend. I can watch all ESPN channels/SECN from my computer or phone in high quality.
ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU/SECN etc is pretty much all I need because I don't watch any TV show or anything else on cable.

See, this is the problem with cutting the cord. Every time sports is brought up, the suggested solutions are
A. Go to a bar
B. Go to a friend/family member's house
C. Get a friend/family member's cable password.
Those are not viable long term solutions IMO. People with kids can't pack up every weekend to hang out at a bar or restaurant for hours to watch games. The relative option is available, but not everyone wants to have a big get together every weekend for games, especially if there are game you want to watch but they don't. If I was paying for cable and here you come asking for my login info so you can't get by without a $100/mo cable bill, I'd tell you to fly a kite.

Offer to chip in on the cable bill and there are plenty of people who would accommodate you. I think we're going to see more and more stand-alone offerings that aren't tethered to a cable/satellite subscription. CBS has already announced its a la carte channel and I can see ESPN, HBO and others following suit.

Have any friends or family that will give you their online password? I got rid of cable and use my parents TWC password to watch just about anything I want. Without that password, you won't get your sports though.

Do you have someone's WatchESPN account you can borrow?
I basically borrowed either my brother's or parents' cable login for WatchESPN. SECTV wasn't on the air yet, so I didn't have to worry about losing it.
I cut cable out right before college football season....didn't miss cable one bit. Saving $100 a month now.

People who brag about "cutting the cord", but in reality are just using a friend's/family's cable password crack me up.

Same here. Basically would be screwed if everyone "cut the cord"

He can use streaming sites like firstrow.eu but stream quality is shitty/barely watchable. WatchESPN rocks if you have the password.

Im not ashamed to say that I got an Apple TV for Espn and have over the air HD cable for abc, fox, cbs, NBC, etc. worked fine for me so far. I have zero need for 95% of the cable channels. All I want is ESPN and fox sports NOLA to watch the pels

Incorrect. Providers would be forced to change their current setup of this happened. And I only use my parents login for about 13 out of the 365 days in a year.

HD antenna for all ABC, NBC, CBS or Fox games. The good games are on these basic channels 9x out of 10.
Can stream CbS games for free with out login.
Boss cast net for all other games.
Games missed = zero

Can someone answer this for me please (I've gotten very mixed answers via google).
If I keep the very basic cable (where I would not be able to watch ESPN on TV), would I then lose access to ESPN, ESPN 2, etc... on watchespn.com?
