I've killed enough mallards to make a season and I still have the best month left

Venice has been lights out. 3 man limits pretty much every hunt. Sherburne has been serviceable. 5 trips have yielded 3, 2, 1, 2 and 0.

I went this morning in NE Arkansas and we only got 2. Saw plenty flying high though, just couldn't get them to land.

fantastic!...not..pretty damn pathetic, killed a few at my lease but nothing to brag about. also killed a few on public land...hunted all weekend at three diffeent spots in the state and scratched all three hunts. Sherburne, Southwest La at the lease, and a cen la wma. seen birds but nothing coming close. ducks are holding up north so i plan on deer hunting from here on out.

Only hunted twice in LA this year shot 8 (2 people) both times.
Hunted Oklahoma for a week, and wore them out though.

How has your duck season been so far?
Glass?
Use binocs to look at unmolested ducks.....
If the ducks holding your area are in groups of 8 with each duck about 20 yards from each other......well don't put two dozen dekes a strings length away from each other
Also....know how different species of duck act when resting or feed....
I laugh my arse off when I see diver dekes bunched up - that means ONE thing.....
We dont like this and we about to roll...

Guys your two best friends as a water fowl hunter are binoculars
And a place at or near where you hunt where the ducks can always go and not be bothered
U can bet everyone having great success right now is because of the latter whether by design or accident
A key to keeping ducks is the rule of threes that goes with most birds
The first timentthey are bumped they move, the second time they move a little further , the third time they leave the area.
Quite honestly I am amazed nearly every day when I talk to duck hunter - and many pick my brain -
How little hunters understand about what ducks do all day and night and under various lunar, weather and pressure conditions.
I'll say it again one marsh lease I am aware of that has 25-30 blinds is having it's best year since the three duck days- whole lease banned mud motors and air boats
Just because ducks are sitting in an area w feed doesn't mean they are feeding
When it's warm and invertebrates are out...they eat that not veggies......remember thtat

Everything you posted is true and I agree with all of it. I actually have some things to add to that wealth of information that I think are imperative to understand, but maybe another time.
That being said, the simple fact of the matter is when numbers are down, a lot of places don't have ducks. A lot of skill is involved in duck hunting, but if the ducks aren't there, the ducks aren't there.

quote:wouldn't those 8 attract more? If your theory holds true of other ducks joining, so wouldn't it matter on when you look? Before or after the ducks join em?

Sushi....
You are WAY more detail oriented than me!
I normally use about 8 doz decoys most without paint, some without heads. I just place them out according to wind and marsh features. Then kill ducks, I still use mojos yesterday was the first day I saw perhaps a weariness to them this year. Hunting big water more decoys and motion make a tremendous difference! Also doing things a little different than everyone else also helps.
