My opinion is that it is one of the greatest games ever created, because it's the opposite of what most games are today.
Minecraft gives kids back something that other games today are taking from them. Their imagination and creativity. When you play Minecraft, you're not spoon fed a narrative and you're not distracted by flashy "realistic" graphics. You're basically given a world full of Lego blocks and told to make your own game, within a set of easy to understand parameters.
It never gets boring to me because its as challenging or laid back as you want it to be.

My stepdaughter plays it. Heck, my best friend plays it. Countless hours. I don't know how they stare at the screen that long. It hurts my eyes just looking at it.

I hear that a lot when I talk to adults about it.
Last month, a coworker of mine was telling me her daughter had really gotten into the Xbox version and was playing online with friends quite a bit. She said she thought it was a huge waste of time, she didn't see the point and the game "looked like crap".
I told her that the point is to play the game. Don't try to "figure it out". Don't try to "get it" because there's nothing to get. It's whatever you want to accomplish in the game, and depending on your imagination, there is plenty to do.
Or maybe I'm just easily entertained
As for the crappy graphics, I'm very grateful that they aren't so high end. Otherwise, the game wouldn't run on my phone (which is the only place I play). Besides, everything is recognizable. Trees look like trees, caves look like caves, etc.

It's a trophy home, according to the article. Apparently $70MM is underpriced compared to cities besides LA for such a home.
He sold Minecraft for a few billion dollars, I think.
