That's pretty awesome how a deer can maintain that kind of size for that long. I always thought that they started declining much earlier than that, maybe they do in different areas of the country.

I would think that even non hunted deer would still have deer instincts "Hey thats a dude, I'm outta here."
Nah. I go hiking around here in Nashville. At 10am on a random arse day in October I will walk up on multiple 120" deer or above. They just look at me like I am one of them

I played golf in a part of Georgia once on a course that winded through an area that had not been hunted in the owner's lifetime. We had to shoo(sp?) deer and turkeys out of the fairways pretty regular.

they do if they are not fed supplements, or there is a poor acorn crop (which is cyclical).

Another interesting thing he pointed out is how he kept all the other bucks out of his territory. If you are not seeing a lot of bucks, this could be why. Last year I hunted five days in a row almost all day long and only saw one buck. I knew there was a big boy in the area and that big boy is now on the wall. After I killed him, I saw all kinds of small bucks.

I guess I'm just used to Bienville Parish deer who wear flack jackets and army crawl through the woods with bullets arrows and mortars falling all around them. Skiddish is an understatment

Yet, I still keep seeing studies that say bucks "aren't territorial." I don't know what to believe. I think it just depends on the amount of deer in your area.

Good read for sure. I too didnt realize a deer could keep it's antler size that long.
