re: So, why are you young people such slackers?

Is it just me or do y'all know a lot of upper 20 year olds that still live on their parents dime (rent/allowance/bills paid)? I blame this on the parents more so than the kids because if the parents don't cut them off they have no incentive (works like welfare).
Maybe I just grew up around spoiled people or something

This is my dad. Still working and making great money. He could retire, but is skiddish considering the economy and, you know, the fact that there's a communist in the White House.

I know of a lot, but that's because I have a lot of friends in that age group. Now that I think or it, most those parents of said kids are, in fact, baby boomers. Is the moral here that baby boomers suck and also raise sucky kids? Someone teach me what my to do so I don't raise a sucky baby boomer type.

I know some who work because it makes them happy. They don't need the money. They have no hobbies. Their only social interaction with other people is through work.
The older people I see working for subsistence are women cashiers... like in the grocery stores. Don't know their stories but it's probably a lot of bad decisions and pregnancies.

Exactly. Both of my in laws have been set for retirement for 4-5 years at least. Financially they are set but have no real reason to retire, so they just say whatever and keep working. Albeit they both like their jobs. But I don't want to work until I'm 70-at least not in a "real" job type career. I hope to sell fruit at a Caribbean beach one day.

Are college students lumped in with these statistics?
That's why they are trying to push everyone into going to college. Not only so that they can issue out more loans and hire more unionized teachers but so that they can keep the young out of the labor force so that they won't be reflected in the unemployment number.

Ah, the real impact is not men over 65. It's women. Thanks for the link.

If you are smart, motivated, and educated in something society wants, it is nearly impossible for a millennial not to eventually find a solid job.
the key is educated in something society wants. I have a 30 year old cousin who cannot find a decent job. She is wicked smart but a history degree is basically useless. She can find stuff but she is making less than her younger brother who didn't go to college.
I actually have very little sympathy for her situation, as she knew her degree wasn't going to get her a job 10 years ago but she continued pursuing it. And her parents are loaded.
But she is smart, and works hard, she just can't find a job that pays much more than min wage.

Is that the truth or is it that she's very picky in her selection? I find that statement very hard to believe.

I second what he said. Most brats my age don't want something beneath them, or what they feel is beneath them. Like.. Being 30 something and still living off your rich parents and working odd jobs because selecting an actual career and starting from the bottom to work up--well, THAT would be too demeaning to entitled brats.
Eta: I hate my generation has such a bad rap but they've earned it. Their lack of ambition and work ethic has been only to my benefit. So carry on, brats!

I mean i am not looking at the jobs she applied for, but I think its a mix of both. No real experience, just a degree and she lives in michigan.

There has to be some other issues with her to not find a job. Sounds like my nephew. Very smart kid. No college degree. Just wanted to hang out and become a teenager for life. Worked as a waiter until he was 35. No wife. No kids.
Then he found a job through his hobby. Video. Got a job with Keith Urban. Did work on the movie "Oh God, Where Art Thou". Doing very well now with his own Country/Western studio.
He was an avowed Marxist all his life. Then when he started earning big money at 45 he changed his philosophy when he discovered something called INCOME TAX.

Usually people like that wait too long to start their career so they assume that they should be paid more than their younger, more experienced colleagues just due to age.

But if she busts her butt at that job another can open up. My gym just lost our manager. The employees all applied. None of them got the job. Why? Because they spent their time on their cell phones.
The job went to a gym member who is a marathon runner and exhibits the traits the management wanted.

i just texted her that some old guy on the internet told her she needs to work harder. I am sure that will do it.
I can see why she isn't happy. When I was 30, I was make $100k a year, and she is smarter than I am. She went to better schools, and made better grades and my degree was just as worthless as hers (philosophy).
She thinks she is worth about $150k, I tried to explain to her in November that you are worth whatever anyone is willing to pay you. She thinks someone will pay her that, she just hasn't met them yet.

Hahahha! What is it that she thinks she can contribute to a company for them to justify paying her a salary (150k/yr) that typically most Americans will never earn after working in a career their entire life. That just affirms her delusion. No offense to her character but she's clearly not living in reality.
But seriously-what is it that she's applying for? Like..does she know what most people in the real world, even in specialized careers like engineering, actually make?
Eta: it doesn't matter what your degree is in outside of things like medical and technical specialties. Mine is equally as useless in the workplace (poli sci).

I feel this exact same way, I really can't stand our generation sometimes. I worked hard through college, got my engineering degree and 5 years later I still try to spend my money as if I'm still in college barely getting by. All the people I know out there making little to nothing and outspending me always makes me laugh.
The worst are the people that get some BS degree knowing all too well that the major they are working for has a low employment rate and little to no pay and then they bitch when they get out. It's like teachers! You know what you are getting into, the statistics are no hidden!
