Let's go over the Harbaugh/Michigan timeline/questions...

This is what we know:
- 49ers are not in playoff contention after losing to Seahawks yesterday.
- NFL regular season ends on December 28
- Harbaugh has one year remaining on his contract with the 49ers
- Oakland has an opening and several other teams are expected to have head coaching vacancies this offseason
- Harbaugh makes $5 million per year. That is $2 million less than what Jeff Fisher (St. Louis) and Chip Kelly (Philadelphia) make.
- It is thought that Harbaugh and the GM for the 49ers don't get along.
- The 49ers plan to trade Harbaugh to another team, but Harbaugh can veto any trade.
- Oakland is expected to fire its GM.
- Michigan wants to hire a new head coach as soon as possible.
- Michigan also needs to hire a new Athletic Director.
- Recruiting dead period begins today and ends on January 14.
- The average high temperature for December in Ann Arbor, MI is 35 degrees.
- The average high temperature for December in Oakland, CA is 58 degrees.
- Harbaugh married his second wife in 2008 and has three small children, including a baby boy.
- Harbaugh is 50 years old.
- This coming Christmas Day is the 10th anniversary of Saban leaving LSU for the Miami Dolphins
- LSU is scheduled to play Notre Dame in the Music City Bowl on December 30.
Obviously, Michigan is waiting for Harbaugh to make a decision. If Miles or anyone else not coaching an NFL team was the top choice, they would be hired by now.
Harbaugh made comments today that he expects his team to fight hard these last two games, despite being out of playoff contention, because "that is what professionals do." This leads me to believe that Harbaugh will not leave before December 28th.
Questions:
1. Do the 49ers have to wait until the end of the regular season to begin trade negotiations with another team?
2. If Harbaugh quit before either of the 49ers' last two games to take the Michigan job, would he forgo part of his salary?
3. Does Harbaugh aspire to have more control than just being a head coach? eg, GM of an NFL team or AD at a university
4. Would coaching at Michigan afford him significant more time to spend with his wife and children?
It appears that this drags on for at least two more weeks.

Two more weeks of speculation season. The Wolverine must have seen it's shadow.

Which is why either Oakland, NYJ, NYG, or the Dolphins will pay him in the 8M/ year range, IMO.
Michigan won't pay him what he is making today, much less increase the ante enough for him to turn away from the NFL.
Miles needs to accept the position today and move on. We need time to get a new HC in before the end of the year.

What is the story on the Oakland to L.A. situation? Staying in the Bay Area to coach at Oakland doesn't make sense if the team is going to move, anyway.

It woould be a Petrino move. Nobody wants to be Petrino.

I would think the 49ers could trade Harbaugh any time they wanted.
He could veto, of course.

Harbaugh isn't going to accept a trade. Why would he? The issue is that SF can make this tough on Harbaugh by taking this process slow. That's why Michigan might not be a viable alternative. SF isn't going to want to fire him if they think he'll leave on his own (they don't want to pay him next year's salary). Harbaugh isn't going to leave on his own, if he's going to be fired (he wants next year's salary).

Yes, of course. And, next year's salary. There may even be penalties. Plus, it's not what professionals do. I don't see him doing that. The Michigan window opens and closes right after the regular season ends. I think it would take an agreement between Harbaugh and SF which, given their relationship, is likely harder than it sounds.

I doubt that is a sticking point if he's with a quality organization. The days of GM/Coaches are behind us for the most part. If he goes to Oakand, that may be a different story.

I don't think so. Both jobs are terribly time consuming. If you believe the family angle is important, it probably leads more towards staying in the Bay area.
The biggest factor in Harbaugh to Michigan is Harbaugh's ego. The opportunity to be viewed as a hero could be compelling to him. Other than that, I think he'll find another NFL job...and he'll do it after SF fires him.

I will add my 2 cents.
Harbaugh is so competitive that he went months without talking to his brother after Super Bowl loss.
His arch rival that began in the college ranks, Pete Carroll, has also won a Super Bowl.
Harbaugh was at the cusp of winning one himself. I just can't see someone with his personality traits allowing anyone to think he would settle for less than what his brother and arch rival accomplished.

would jim stay at san fran if the owner fired the GM, gave jim a big raise and gave him more control of player personnel?

Really? Because I'm wondering what I'll see first, Brady Hoke's successor or the Hale-Bopp Comet.

I'm no expert on the inner workings of running an NFL team, but I think once you factor in recruiting, college demands just as much if not more time than the NFL.

Saban bolted for Miami on Christmas Day?
OT Alpha if there ever was one.

The 49ers don't have to wait to negotiate a trade with Oakland, since their coaching spot is open. They would have to wait for other jobs to open before expanding those negotiations.

Yes, and if he quits at the end of the season he owes SF the remaining year.

What if Harbaugh to Michigan is being floated with the NFL timeline you listed to provide cover for Miles to get past the bowl game.

Do any reasonable Michigan fans really think he will go back to college?
The dude has been living\coaching in California for over a decade.
His last 4 jobs were at..
Oakland
San Diego
Stanford
San Francisco
The guy has been in the NFL for only 4 years. In that short time, he has brought the 49ers from bottom dwellers in the NFC to going to the NFC Championship game 3 straight times in his 1st 3 seasons (only NFL coach to ever do that) and to 1 superbowl.
He is a definite top 5 HC in the NFL right now, probably #2 behind Belichick to be honest.
The dude obviously loves living in Cali, due to all of his coaching jobs being there besides his 1st stint at WKU and living there for over a decade.
He is at the pinnacle of his profession coaching in the NFL making a shite ton of money, and due to get a huge raise at his next gig.
Knowing all of this, you guys still think he is going to go back to Michigan because he was a QB there almost 3 decades ago?

Well, Gruden signed a contract extension with MNF, so he's off the list.
