This is very true.

This country is losing craftsmen.

Finding mechanics and electricians are difficult.

I think the mentality that all kids had to go to college started around the late 80s and grew through the 90s into the 2000s.

It predates that - it was the late boomers - kids born in the late 50s - if you'll recall, the U.S. started losing the manufacturing war to Asia in the 1970s. That triggered the move towards information sector and other service/professions and away from manufacturing-related as a "go to" work 20 to 30 years and get a pension job.

There is no shame in making $50,000/year working a blue-collar and starting the workforce at age 19 as opposed to starting at 22 and making even less. working a "college degree job."

Well, we've outsourced damn near every job that isn't "service worker" or "knowledge worker" - for starters.

A college degree is a membership card, and membership has its benefits.

I don't regret one penny of my student loans.
BUT
I didn't get a PhD in Babylonian Astrology and then wonder why I couldn't find a job.

I don't care who you know, that isn't normal now and it wasn't normal 20 years ago.

50K could be a bit high.

A job making 15/Hr and averaging 10 hrs of OT a week is almost 43K.

In our family it was just assumed that we would all go.

One side of the family has 7 grandchildren with 7 degrees.

80's and 90's mentality I guess

I was born in 78 and not going to college was never an option for me, I never even considered not going for a second. Its something everyone in my family does and has done because we are not trashy.

I think your math is a bit off, 10hrs a day, 50 a week is like 34k. Unless the OT pays a bonus.

I've never worked hourly, but I've always heard over time was paid at time and a half. Is that not the case?

ETA: I would also be very depressed if I was working 50 hours a week and not making more than 43k a year

It started around the mid to late sixties ... and this country has gone steadily downhill since.

Well the hypocrisy in the OP is strong. He claims that 19 year olds can make $50k but he's probably one of the same ones complaining about millinials wanting $100k after going through college.
