No one should be surprised. Wisconsin football is not as good as people think it is. They haven't competed for a national title, football while self-funded is not a priority at Wisconsin like it is at LSU or Alabama and not even like Ohio State or Michigan State in the big ten.

Wisconsin wants to win big ten titles on the cheap and with Ohio State willing to do what it takes and Michigan State starting to come around and Michigan just in hibernation and Penn State waking it up, Wisconsin is not a great job.

I'd also rather coach in pac 12 than big 10 though.

I'd coach the Pac 12 over every other conference in a landslide geographically.

Can't beat it IMO

I had no idea you were a genie?

Oregon State is so much more into their football than Wisconsin, right?

I agree location and conference but it's marginal in the scheme of things. Where are the national titles?

Haven't competed for a national title, you're right. It's still a very good job. Wisconsin was one of the top-15 programs of the BCS era, winning over 70% of their games.

On the cheap... right...

You do know that only Ohio State has more Big Ten Championships than Wisconsin since Barry Alvarez resurrected the Wisconsin program? That is 25 years of being one of the best teams this conference has to offer, including a period when Michigan wasn't in 'hibernation' and Penn State thought they could join the Big Ten and walk through it.

Wisconsin is not a great job.

Great job? Maybe not. A very good job? You bet it is.

Wisconsin fans are delusional. They actually believe they are a top-tier destination program that commands national respect.

Michigan State finished 3rd last year--a program you consider beneath you and yet it's a ranking that Wisconsin has ever achieved. Wisconsin has NEVER been in contention for the BCS title game once November comes around and we see that in the new era it is a stepping stone job.

Wisconsin fans have a bloated sense of their program.

I mean, it is the third best B1G job opening we have seen this offseason.

Jesus Christ.

When did I say it was a top-tier destination program? How on earth is what I said a bloated sense of the program? I had no idea saying that Wisconsin was a very good job, but short of great was implying it was a top-tier destination.

Again, in the last 25 years of college football, since Barry Alvarez took over the Wisconsin program, only one program in the B1G has been to more Rose Bowls than Wisconsin. One. Couple that with a Top-15 record in the BCS era, both of which you chose to ignore, and you have yourself a very good product on the field.

Wisconsin also has a new Student-Athlete Performance Center, a new scoreboard, a new north end zone entrance, and a raucous stadium set in a beautiful capital city lying on an isthmus.

It is an attractive destination with a very good football program.

Great programs compete for national championships. Wisconsin is not great, but EVERY other number points to a very good program.

Behind Nebraska and Michigan.

Not sure how that is considered a bad thing...

Doesn't change the fact that it is still a good job.

Wisconsin has a great program.

They schedule home and homes with top tier Pac 12 programs like Oregon State.

Their rent a head coach program is highly innovative.

Quit dogging on Wisconsin, dude.

Isn't this the second coach in a row to move from a good wisconsin team to a team needing to rebuild?

What is the x factor here? I thought Bert leaving for Arkansas was just sorta a fluke, but now it looks like there's definitely something turning coaches away up there.

I would put Nebraska behind Wisconsin.

SB Nation has a good article up this morning explaining the theories behind why Andersen left:

LINK

My favorite part:

quote:

Some have noted Andersen disliked Wisconsin's rigorous academic standards, which made it difficult to recruit and retain players.

But, as Drew Hamm and Sam Brief at Bucky's Fifth Quarter point out, Wisconsin's standards for current students are identical to those at Oregon State. And the Badgers have the third-best recruiting class in the Big Ten at the moment, according to 247Sports. Andersen's incoming class was actually better than his class the previous year, and better than almost every class ever signed by Bielema.

Dude will not be in Corvallis long (5 years tops) but it's hard to see how the Beavers could have pulled in a better head coach.

ETA:
Breakdown of 2015 Wisconsin recruiting class
4 recruits from Cali
5 recruits from Florida
2 from Illinois
1 from Michigan
1 from Missouri
1 from American Samoa
2 from New Jersey
4 from Texas
1 from Utah
1 from Virginia
2 and only 2 from Wisconsin

A guy who can recruit kids from every time zone must have been awfully attractive to a school in Corvallis 42 miles from a school that can definitely recruit kids from anywhere in America to play for Nike U.

Second best head coaching hire this offseason. Only Youngstown State did better.

I keep seeing a million different reasons have been given, none of which bode well for Wisconsin as they try to hire their their 3rd coach in 2 years.

- assistant pay sucks
- hated living in the Midwest (stupid because Madison is awesome)
- Alvarez sucks to work under
- recruiting restrictions, either budgetary or academic

So basically, one or more is true and has caused them to lose two coaches in two years. Alvarez coaching in the bowl game (again) doesn't exactly disspell the notion that he's a meddling AD.
