Their recruiting overall has taken a nose dive under Viator. They don't even do that well with SWLA players like they used to.

They also don't seem to recruit the same type of defensive players as in the past. I can remember them having Joe Judge and Hadley Prince as the starting safeties and both were All-Americans.

Their biggest issue is that they have sucked at getting size on the defensive line, especially at the defensive tackle position. A couple years ago, their defensive tackles were the size of an average LB. They have had some decent defensive backs the past few years, but I agree overall nothing compared to those they had in the 1995-2003 era.

He has three DWI's. Do you think he could stay sober enough to coach them?

Lance always seemed like a nice enough guy, I think he'd take being the HC at his alma mater pretty seriously.

Lance has a son that will soon be on trial for murder. That's a pretty big distraction to deal with on top of being a college head coach.

I agree, but since Viator will be around for at least another year or two, he might be available by then.

Good recruiter and motivator

He cut ties with him when he got him on at McNeese. Lance was still at Miami - Ohio at the time.

I think the murder happened out in California. This was the moms boyfriend supposedly that he killed and stuffed in the trunk. Think it was in there for 2-3 days.

Seems like in the early 2000's, McNeese was always a viable option for those who didn't get looks at the LSU's and Texas's.

Now its an almost "Last Resort" school. Many would rather just go CC and try and get D1 offers that way.

They play a school now called Incarnate Word?

Incarnate Word is now in the SLC. Since UTSA and Texas State left, we added a few shittier schools to replace them.

We are still competitive. We should have absolutely beat a decent Nebraska team. We have played competitively with the likes of UNC, beat FBS USF. UUnfortunately, we can't competein the must wins. Sam Houston and more recently Southeastern have had our number and we can't consistently beat either of them. Even overall, our consistency is a huge issue. We may be hanging around with Nebraska one week, and then weeks later be getting our arse handed to us by someone far shittier.

I'm sure SLU and Lamar coming back to football have had to effect their recruiting efforts.

Does McNeese still pull in alot of FBS transfers? That seems to be where SLU is getting some difference makers

Recruiting in Louisiana/East Texas-into Houston for players who don't get looked at by LSU, Texas, or the Aggies seems to be a zero-sum game. If one school rises, another necessarily falls.

It seems like McNeese has suffered since UL and SELA have risen the last few seasons.

Tate was very good at bringing in bigtime recruits that for one reason or another quit/or was released from bigtime schools. go back and look at the rosters when he was there. half the team was transfers from sec/big 12 schools. The downside to that was discipline. viator thought he could recruit locally and get the same results and it aint happenin.

It's beyond my understanding how McNeese can't recruit.outside Louisiana and Southeast Texas.

I've brought this up before and people say it's a money issue.

There's no such thing as email? Phones? Social media? At least get a feel for a kids interest? You won't know unless you ask and go.from there.

There's one kid from Oklahoma and 2 kids from Florida.

You look at schools from THE MVWC and the Big Sky, youre looking at kids from everywhere.

I just don't buy the fact that they're just doing what they can. They can kick the tires with kids anywhere they want in the south and go from there.

My daughter graduated from Tulane, so the last time I saw a McNeese game in person was around 2010-11 or so when they played Tulane in the dome.

I was struck by how small they looked--almost like a high school team.

It was in sharp contrast to those McNeese teams from 1995-2001 or so. Many of those teams were huge--almost like an SEC team.

It even seems like McNeese's "Newton connection" has been affected.

For years, the Cowboys having several players from Newton, Tx. on their roster was the rule rather than the exception.

Newton has long been one of the best small-school programs in Texas--more of a "system" program with athletes not quite good enough for the big-time, but assets to FCS schools like McNeese.

Now, Newton's best are getting big-time offers. The last three seasons, they've had players commit to Arkansas, Texas, and Texas A&M, with said players getting LSU offers.
