Is Matt Viator at McNeese Feeling any Heat at All?

A local said that he has a cozy relationship with the boosters and donors, but c'mon.
After starting the year looking great against Nebraska, the Cowboys looked like they might return to their 90's-early 2000's form when they regularly went deep in the 1AA playoffs.
But then they go into the tank and lose their last three key conference games. A barely-winning season with no playoffs seems to be the new norm for McNeese.
Come on ... there's got to be at least some rumblings of unrest in Lake Charles.

I've been wondering about this too. McNeese was once one of the top teams in the Southland. Now they are losing to programs like Lamar. Also when we go to the playoffs, we aren't even competitive in the game. What's the deal?

It's getting a bit warm, IMO
He pulls another 7-5 next year, I'm on the bandwagon for him to go

Heard its turmoil among the coaching staff. Some coaches looking to get out ASAP.

Never should have gotten rid of Kirby. They wanted him out and the money people wanted Viator... well look where its left them

Kirby wasn't the coach before Viator. Tommy Tate was, and he got fired for sleeping with the cheerleaders on road trips which is how Viator came into the job.
Its far past time for Viator to go, but the money loves him for whatever reason. And our AD has no nutsack.

I think he is related to one of the Lawtons. It will take a lot for him to be gone, if that's right.
McNeese as a whole has taken a step back in the last several years, between the quality of play and the caliber of the conference. They play a school now called Incarnate Word? How the hell is that worse than being in FCS and competing with more respectable opponents? It's embarrassing. They could do so much better, especially since LC is about to grow with the coming boom.

Wasn't Tate in his mid 50's?

Yeah he was. Not buying the sleeping with cheerleader bit.
Couplet players did tell me that the discipline didn't exist with him. They'd hide behind bleachers when they were doing early morning workouts etc etc.

i live in LC but am not a MSU guy and don't really pay attention to their shite. here is the vibe i get as a pure outsider
great guy who runs a clean program and graduates his players. he can be a legit Xs and Os guy, but has problems recruiting (but the "clean program" and "graduates players" stuff is likely a major part of that issue)
he has a good relationship with the boosters and they seem happy about the players he's recruiting and success they bring

Tate was not good at discipline at all. I was very good friends with most of the guys who played for him 2000-2003.

Even if there was unrest, who would they hire?

Kirby had a gambling problem if I remember correctly. He's running the local votech (ABC) training school. Heck of a defensive mind that's for sure.

Best guess off the top of my head would be:
Lance Guidry, head coaching experience (interim coach at Miami Ohio and Western Kentucky), former McNeese player, McNeese Defensive Coordinator, good recruiter.
The problem McNeese has is they historically pay their HC and staff terribly compared to other conference schools, especially the TX schools.
Another coach I could see eventually as Head Coach at McNeese is Adam Henry. He is a former McNeese Player, former McNeese Offensive Coordinator (and WR Coach), and great recruiter.
*Henry also has position coach experience (TE) in the NFL.

He has three DWI's. Do you think he could stay sober enough to coach them?

It's been time for him to go and I really like him as a person. One of his problems is he is too loyal to assistants. He has let some coaches just hang around way too long like Lark Hebert for example.
They also don't seem to recruit the same type of defensive players as in the past. I can remember them having Joe Judge and Hadley Prince as the starting safeties and both were All-Americans.

Yes his gambling did him in. Great guy and coach though. He was the reason they had such great defenses for so long. I feel bad for the guy as he and his wife lost two sons who OD'd just a week or so apart.

I'm on the bandwagon to get rid of him. But he has too many connections in Lake Charles and southwest LA in general, so he's likely here to stay.

Why does McNeesechave almost zero recruiting presence in the Baton Rouge area? I know they used to be loaded with Texas players, but 2 hours to the East has a ton of players as well.
