I second this. Make sure you go after dark and bring cash and all of your valuable possessions, that's how you get the best prices!

No.
Also, go to a local jeweler. Not a chain. Try Raymonds in Kenner. They're fantastic and extremely helpful.

The biggest scam perpetrated ever, especially since they can now make perfect diamonds in laboratories, whereas a diamond from the earth will always be flawed a lab can have all impurities removed. Buy a lab made one. Debeers is the biggest scam artists and seller of blood diamonds on earth. All diamonds some way some how are through debeers where they literally have enormous warehouses full of diamonds ready to be sold to suckers at astronomical prices.

Go to Blue Nile online if you insist on playing your part in this sham. That webpage has literally everything you want or need to know about diamonds.
PS. DONT GET frickING MARRIED.

Use this as an excellent chance to actually learn something about the person you plan on spending your life with. If you think you should spend 2500$ and she is looking at 20,000$+ rings you have different priorities in life and marriage may not be for you two.. If you are both silly materialistic fricks buy whatever you can finance, if not pick out something she likes that you can afford to pay for without financing. Just my 2 cents

Blue Nile has a very informative website you might want to check out.
ETA: I think anything over a carat is overkill. Concentrate on getting the most quality diamond you can get for your price range.

quote:Actually you can buy a used diamond pretty easily. Many people sell their diamonds after they divorce.
Ever hear of anyone reselling a diamond? No? Here's why - because after you walk out of the diamond store, it has depreciated to a value approaching 0 (i.e., its true value). Don't buy into the sham!

I think the best bang for the buck is a GIA diamond, g-h in color, SI,1 with a precision cut. Some of large faceted, older cuts look very good even with colors around an m...

Everyone in this thread who has said no to the idea of alternative gemstones either have no idea what they are talking about, or they are deeply jealous of the idea because they have already bought a diamond.
I am considering either Alexandrite or a Scarlet Emerald for the stone on my girlfriends engagement ring. They are much rarer than diamonds and hold their value exceedingly well.

I know the emerald is not strong enough for daily wear...

Just got finished with this process
I took her shopping to get an idea of what she wanted. I asked her for her top 3 and picked from that. I know it ruins the surprise part, but I'd rather know I got what she wanted than "surprise, she hates it"
big box stores, chains and highly advertised retailers. Most of the name brand stores that you hear ads for showed me rings with bad quality diamonds for big prices.
try your best to get her to show you what she likes. DON'T GUESS ON THIS.
What you can afford. I was tempted pretty often to get that big ring that would take a few more months to pay for with credit, but instead I kept looking and found a jeweler I trusted that met my budget.
The setting was actually the easiest part. It's the stone that makes you work. I can't help you with gemstones like ruby or sapphire, but if you go diamond, check back in.
