"Speaking of Desean Smith, I remember a time or two when a struggling Jennings hit him in stride and Smith blew the play.
Based on targets to Desean Smith (usually 3rd downs I might add), his name should probably really be Desean "Drive Killer" Smith."
IIRC, DeSean was targeted 2X all season. He dropped his first attempt vs Wisconsin. The other vs Arky (Arky player ejected).

In reference to drafting an LSU tight end for college fantasy, these gems were dropped, LINK
You're gonna want Smith at TE. Lester Earl
You'll be glad you did take Smith this year. Could be our #3 pass catcher. datbayoubengal
Then there was this genuis
Dickson will be our most productive TE, but I wouldnt draft an LSU tight end unless you get points for blocking
For whatever reason us throwing to a TE is about as often as Halley's Comet lsupride87 aka the GOAT
This is all in good fun, Lord knows I have been wrong before

We have probably the best group of TEs in the conference but this is hard to verify due to lack of targeted passes to them
Posted on 12/5/14 at 2:35 pm to LSU_Saints_Hornets
you guys realize that JJ Watt has more touchdowns than a ton of NFL TEs and more than most colleges right?
theres a huge misconception on here that a ton of colleges use a TE in tbe passing game

Or considering leaving himself, possible. I mean really, he was a TOP TE along with Jacory Washington. They were clearly told they were going to catch passes, because neither one would have come here knowing they would block.
Smith has caught 4 balls in 2 years. Wouldn't blame him for second for finding a better path to the NFL. LSU is a great path to the league, for almost any position except TE.
this...
couldnt blame him one second, if your at LSU you should have a QB to throw passes too....the fact that we are running %70 of the time is embarrassing...

Posted by SabiDojo I was joking, really. I'm not blind. I know our TE's are criminally underutilized.
Lol. I know, it's just frustrating. Can see guys like D. Smith and Jacory transferring eventually if things don't change.

we can't throw to our tightends more, that would mean we couldn't throw it 10 times a game to connor neighbors out of the back field.

We have more TE's on our roster than we care to count and we hardly ever pass to them.
Well you have to have enought because we line them up in the backfield and 2 or 3 of them on the line just to block for toss dive right/left

Hes 6'5 245-250lbs. And was said to have the best hands in the nation coming out of high school and was said that he has some of the best hands on the team during the spring. He's not a great blocker, Gordon and Stokes are clearly better blockers. But Smith is a match up nightmare in the passing game and considering we have a QB that struggles throwing the ball and how young we are at WR and struggled for most part outside of Dural, having a 6'5 receiver with great hands and route running ability and athleticism would def help Jennings out.
Nor saying he should be on the field 90% of the snaps, but when we go 3+ receivers and in passing situations, Smith should be on the field. You can split him out wide, have him in the slot, end line TE spot, out of the backfield, etc. He's too big of a mismatch to not get out there more and we need to make a point to look his way when he is in there, which he rarely is. Put a DB on him, throw it up and let him go get it. Put a LB on him, he will beat him with his speed.
Despite not playing as much as he thought he would, and much less than most LSU fans thought, I do alwyas notice DeSean Smith on the sidelines being very animated and exciting out there and cheers on his teammates and talks with Jennings. So gotta give him credit for that and it's nice to see considering most of our guys are not that enthused about the O.
Oh and Jennings had 5 TDs vs SEC teams this year. Watt had 5 total TDs this year.

Gordon is not a great blocker. I haven't seen any evidence of it. Also, Smith has not been hit in stride once this year. That ball in the Wisc game was behind him and he had to fall to the ground to be able to even touch it with his hands behind him. He is a big guy. He is not going to be able to change directions to move to the ball as well, but if you can hit him, he is going to be a load to bring down.

Les Miles quote about our TEs during spring...
quote:
"Any time you have a position used to block and he can also receive the ball it makes a tremendous difference in your attack," LSU coach Les Miles said. "It's another quality receiver. DeSean Smith and Jacory Washington are guys we will use in the fall."

LSU has about 45 TEs on the roster too and haven't found one that could catch under Miles here.

quote:Not sure what you have been watching because Gordon is in fact a damn good run blocker. Its literally the only reason hes out there. This is what analysts have said about him:
Gordon is not a great blocker. I haven't seen any evidence of it.
quote:
Gordon amounts to an extra offensive tackle in the Tigers' offense because he's such a powerful blocker. Left tackle La'el Collins, a strong 2015 draft prospect, raves about the holes that open on the left side when Gordon lines up beside him
quote:I agree he hasnt been hit in stride at all... Hell hes only seen like 3 targets all year long. But Smith can move. In fact hes much more of a WR than he is a TE. He was a WR in high school and was split out over 90% of the time. Hes basically an overgrown WR. He can move and change directions just fine.

if you can't earn the confidence in practice to get targets, why would the coaches feel confident to target you during the game?

well that one is purely ridiculous. Our recruiting classes are pretty average compared to other top SEC schools and not even in the same league as Bamas. Now Miles does do a good job of developing talent but you can say that he fails to effectively utilize the offense talent.
