Your favorite guitar sounds (example)

Considering all the effects and styles of guitars, what is your favorite sound for an electric guitar? For example, Mark Knopfler, Eric Clapton, The Edge, etc. have a certain sound (through tuning, pedals, amp, etc.) they are known for.
I love the 90's punk/rock crunch here. That's how I like the guitar to sound...some distortion, but nothing over the top like a heavy Pantera palm mute riff.

It depends on what I'm playing. Some of my favorites:
for a lead guitar sound: Queen in most anything they played. "We Are The Champions", "Bohemian Rhapsody", ect
Tom Morello in "Killing in the Name Of"
for rhythm guitar: Breaking Benjamin's "Skin", Yellowcard's "Breathing"

SRV...Little Wing. All of the tones in that song are so dynamic and beautiful.

Rickenbackers when used in jangle-pop, or whatever the hell Buckingham does.

Perfectly timed delay. Reference he would have laughed by Deerhunter. Makes me feel good in my bathing suit spot.

Johnny Hickman from Cracker has a great sounding guitar IMO.

I don't think it gets any better than the sound of a Telecaster in the hands of a master. No effects necessary. Roy Buchanan

Their larger than life sound was achieved by layers upon layers of overdubbing. I think I read somewhere that Soma had 40 something dubs. Unfortunately that sound isn't achieved with one guitar, amp, pedal, etc. However, I'm pretty sure Corgan was a huge fan of the rack ADA MP1 pre-amps back in the day.
