Dodgeball and Gotcha are tops...
We also played at recess a form of tag with a mini football... Whoever was "it" had to hit another child... Preferably in the face with the football.. Played it all over the jungle gym... I got really good at going about halfway down the slide and jumping off in one motion to avoid that ball.

We did not have the "face forward and risk a shot to the nuts" rule...that's just crazy talk.
yeah, our version of wallball involved standing spread eagle with your face against the wall and the person who got you "out" got to throw at you. 3 "outs" and everyone lined up for a throw. Nothing quite like having a tennis ball whiz by your ear and slam in to the wall next to your head

We played this version as well, also with soccer style PKs.
But, every single person aimed for the nuts when they threw or kicked. (also we forced each other to stand with their arse out so the nuts were exposed to some degree to ensure proper contact). If they moved or flinched.....free kick/throw
Every once in a while the ultimate tournament loser would have to stand face forward and risk a full frontal shot to the jewels.

Steal the bacon and capture the flag were favorites before we had an actual gym.
Once it was up we always went for dodgeball. Apparently it was considered the ultimate test of agility and reflexes to our 7th grade class. I remember seeing my classmates pulling insane stunts and risking major injury just to win that game. The competition was insane.

Warball (basically dodgeball with the softish (hard foam nerf) soccer balls.
As a kid I always wondered if Edwin Edwards' relative owned the parachute supply company. All schools had them in the 80's. Thought it might've been just a Louisiana thing. IIRC, it wasn't even a game or anything, just raising, lowering, and shaking the parachute.

Wallball was a classic nola catholic grammar school game. Also football with a tennis ball and the one bounce rule. I remember having to staple our uniform shirts because all the buttons got ripped off.

Interesting to read this, I'm a middle school p e teacher greatest job ever. Every day kids ask can we play dodgeball we have many variations of it. Always nice to get out there and play with the kids.

I'm definitely late to the game on this, but handball is the GOAT PE game.

Wallball at recess err'day!
Switched from catholic school to public school and not one bastard knew what wallball was.
They played volleyball as if it were the only game that ever existed...like a bunch of figs.
Was a shocking transition.
