Does the example of La'el encourage more to stay this year?

will we retain more key personnel (finally)?
i asked the question thinking primarily of Danielle Hunter, then realized there are quite a few more that are eligible.
Edit prompted by MajorTiger: does the example of Freak help from the other direction?
do those that AREN'T as good as OBJ and Jarvis realize it and stick around for development?

it definitely helps that La'el made some serious cash with an extra year

I hope so. But it is one of those things that you can never predict.
Collins made a lot more money staying a year at LSU
Leinart lost a lot of money staying a year at USC (He was gonna be the #1 pick after his JR year)
With injuries to factor in, I will never be mad at anyone who makes the jump to the NFL.

Doubtful. Frankly fans need to just expect anyone eligible to leave to go. Much less disappointing that way.

It may help with some. Also watching some guys like Freak Johnson go undrafted might encourage some guys to stay.
On the other hand, I'm sure some are watching Beckham, Hill, and Landry making huge impacts in the NFL as rookies.

The 3 and out is going to be norm moving forward. Most kids want to be a 3 and out, 1st rounder. Similar to BBall, they want to be a 1 and out.
Do u go and get paid vs sweating down here in the minor leagues for free risking injury and a stock drop or increase in value? If staying should increase your paycheck considerably, u should at least consider staying, under most circumstances. Its kinda like going to college or entering the workforce, decision time.
Hasnt worked out for some to leave early and it hasnt worked out for some that stayed.
Collins is a great example of a kid that played his cards correctly, it seems. Others would be foolish not to take notice of his example.

Why would you stay for 8 wins and a 1954 style offense?

By the way, if most of these guys stay, next year is looking a lot more like 10-11 wins.

I hope those who want to stay, stay. Those who want to leave, leave. Those who are undecided, please come back.

To get a degree. And don't act like if we hadn't lost 18 in players over the past two seasons we wouldn't have won more games.

Johnson is still making $510,000 per season. I'm sure he isn't too upset about leaving. He also would have likely gotten drafted anywhere between the 4th and 6th round and made more money if he wasn't a dumb arse and failed a drug test at the combine. It was the same thing with Mettenberger. If he didn't fail that drug test there is no way he is a 6th rounder.

like I posted in another thread, if lm leaves then ever draft eligible player will leave. no one will stay and trust there future to someone they don't know. 2014 season will be long one if lm leaves.

That's true, but players better realize there are no Beckham, Hills, or Landrys on this team this year. All those guys were first round talents that would fall no lower than 2nd round. Most of those guys considering coming out would be in mid to late rounds, and have to really fight to make a team. Only ones who would maybe get 2nd round consideration is Collins and Hunter. The higher you are drafted, and the more they invest in you, the more chances teams will give you to succeed. The lower you are drafted, the less patience they have with you unless you are producing. Michael ford makes team one season and gone the next.

that is another good example. But I was thinking Leinart. He was the consensus #1 pick after his Jr season. Decided to stay at USC and was drafted #11, before the rookie pay scale was enacted. Had he left after his Jr season he would have made more bank than he did.

Dude, Freak has only played in 6 games this year. He has 1 tackle. He'll actually get paid $420k this year....provided he is on the team through the end of the year. After that he has to make the team next year to get his $510k. Not an easy task......

Agree
It doesn't mean there are no other solutions however

I hope so. Alexander should stay seeing as though he encouraged Collins to stay for his senior year.
