My 2 cents:

1. Good for you for helping the family out. You made an impression on this guy's kids that no parent can ever teach.

2. I question whether I would be able to do the same thing. For one, I know nothing about brake lines and how to fix them so I wouldn't be much help. But, more importantly, when the guy said they were out of money and waiting for someone to wire him my gut reaction is that he's just looking for hand-outs. I live in Chicago and the amount of panhandlers and "stories" that I have heard have made be jaded about anyone asking for hand-outs.

3. I am for one, glad that you posted this. I will be looking for how I can pay something forward (and not the Starbucks kind) during this Christmas season.

Kudos to you MeauxJeaux2.

This! Except that i'm kind of useless when it comes to mechanical stuff like this so I don't know that I would've been the help that he was.

meauxjeaux, thank you for sharing your story. Writing about your experience is a great way to inspire others and I personally appreciate the reminder of the meaning of this season.

That's awesome.
It's been years since I helped a stranded motorist. I used to do it a lot, now worried about getting jacked.

You followed the golden rule the way that it was meant to be followed. For that I salute you sir and wish great things upon the house of Meaujeaux.

I am as well but if you saw those 4 kids kicking around that ball in that desolated parking lot while everyone is rushing around trying to get to their Thanksgiving feasts while they were stuck there i have a feeling that you would have done the same.

And everyone who isn't mechanically inclined, the guy really didn't need as much mechanic help as he just needed another man there to talk to,and hand him tools. He was pretty down about the whole thing.

We've all been there (well, maybe not all the silver-spoon OT'ers).

It never hurts to help a man when he's down.

To the numbnuts saying you did this just to post about it, .

Brake work, especially in a parking lot, is a damn dirty chore. It's pretty clear they'd never stoop to such shenanigans.

If the car had rusted brake lines, I would be terrified of something else failing too. Generally when brakes fail it's the rear cylinders or at the master cylinder. I can't say I've ever seen rusty lines (but I am sure that is a northern vehicle w/salt roads))

Easy, Hillary.

I'm saying, the difference is that I would make damn sure I had enough emergency money before I loaded up the family and went across the country.

Maybe he should have gone by himself, worked, saved, and sent for his family at a later date in a responsible manner.

Some folks can't always do things the ideal way.

If you get between a rock and a hard place, sometimes you have to make less than ideal choices.

Many people don't have that kind of opportunity. It's highly possible the guy was doing the best for his family and I applaud anyone for moving for opportunity instead of sitting on their arse and living off the taxpayer. Leaving the family behind may not have been possible.

I know. I've tried to make controversial statements a few times, and no one will bite. This thread is full of too much good will.
