Back them all up to a .PST and copy it off. It's generally undetectable. Forwarding them or doing anything to generate traffic is pure stupidity.

If the email came from his wife, I'd delete it without thinking.
If it came from a source (and you can't identify it as a client, other employee, etc.), I would get the regional manager involved.
