Looking for a new miter saw

I have an old hand me down 10" Craftsman, I have been using it for years around the house.
I am building a new mantel for the fireplace and need to miter some wider boards than my saw can handle. I always use projects to aquire a new tool so help me pick out a new saw.
I know I want a 12" saw, I haven't made up my mind on sIngle or dual bevel or a sliding saw. I want a good saw for home projects. Any first hand experiences would be great. Not hung up on any brand but I do like good quality tools.
Thanks

had a Hitachi that my ex-brother in law meth head borrowed and never got back. It was excellent.
Heres a site that sells refurb stuff if you are into that sort of thing.

Saw those yesterday at Home depot, they get pretty good reviews. Anybody know who makes them?

Unless you're getting a sliding miter get a 15".
Makita or Dewalt

I like the Dealt, from what I have read the Makita's get excellent reviews also.

12 sliding is the answer.. If you don't make a living with your tools pretty much any brand will get the job done.

I pretty much agree with this but if I'm spending 400 to 600 on A saw I want to get the best bang for my buck.

My FIL just bought Mr a Wen 10`` sliding saw. Its been great so far. Cuts 12 in boards has come in handy. Its nice if you don't want to spend a fortune.

I have a bosch sliding mitre saw, and it has been great, but I was doing some research just now and and dang these things have gotten pricey. But what you will need to get the most out of your saw is a nice table if you dont need it to be moble you can build a nice table with adjustable stops and fence that will make doing crown molding and other projects much easier than using a saw horse. something like this is easy click here

Thats a nice looking table. I will probably do something like that for my shop, I also want a portable stand to take with me.
I think I have decided on the Dewalt DW782, dual bevel, sliding, 12 inch saw, Lowe's has one in stock for 399.
Is the add on laser worth $70 bucks? Thanks for all the reply guys.

Check around at the pawn shops, you can normally pick one up for a fraction of the price...

This is the only answer worth considering. DW716 is the defacto saw for professional trim carpenters. Sliding miter saws don't have the precision and a 12" compound miter will handle anything you can reasonably cut with a portable miter.

Good point but I think for the DIY'er the sliding saw offers more versatility, IMO.

More versatility than what? I've used both and there isn't much you can't cut on a DW716 that a sliding saw will do that much better for the jump in price. 2x12's? Can do with both. Sliding saw won't cut crown or base as nicely. Forget about the laser guides too. Learn to use your eyes and a speed square better.

You can get after market lasers plus look at many of the portable stands most of them will accept any saw I think my portable stand is a ryobi it works great I do like the wheeled ones.
The lasers are nice plus I won't misplace it like a speed sq

Man I have run many a feet of base and crown with the hand me down Craftsman and my eyes. I'm just needing a new saw and want to get my monyes worth.
I just got back from Lowe's and they didn't have the DWS782 in stock and said they probably would not be getting anymore. PISSED me off royally. I looked at the DW716 while I was there it is a nice saw. Thanks for the input.
