Umm wut?
I always like to give gay rights ppl a hard time by asking this question. How is being gay not a disease or a genetic disorder if the definiton of a genetic disorder is

A genetic disorder is an illness caused by one or more abnormalities in the genome,
Which leads to a secondary question of is it okay to abort a fetus so that you don't have a gay child?
Yes I know I am nit picking but it is fun to troll them sometimes.

IMO there not a "gay gene". More than likely gayness is linked to a combination of genes that initiate the production or inhibition of particular hormones and their concentrations during critical phases of human sexual development. Once someone is past these critical phases of sexual development their sexual orientation is set in stone.

Kinsey and the wide world disagree.

I wouldn't try it. my grad school was freaking nazis about plagarism and unauthorized access. Not worth getting sent to the dean of academic affairs and all that bullshite to post on TD.

Studying homosexual pairs is a little bit of a confirmation bias.
How so?

I think studying discordant sexual preferences with more similar DNA would be far more instructive.
There is utility in this as well, but would be very difficult in genome wide-type studies. You have to keep in mind we are all 99.9% (or something like that) genetically identical, so what metric could you reliably utilize to determine if one has "more similar" DNA in a statistically significant manner in a realistic sized study? Its easier to start with the more limiting factor (in this case, starting with pairs of homosexual brother--a relative rarity) and analyzing genome accordingly

Well, the issue is whether homosexuality is an "illness" or normal variant. I say the latter.

Is red hair a genetic abnormality? Should you be able to abort children that will have red hair?
I hope they find it, so it will shut down the conversation about gays. Oh wait, the anti-science crowd which overlaps with the I hate gays crowd will never accept ANYTHING that paints being gay as normal.

If you're not comparing them to heterosexuals with similar dna and environment, it's difficult to tell what is the "norm," correct? And I would bet dollars to donuts that there are self-identified straight people with the genome characteristics listed in this study. If there are straight people with the genetic difference, why aren't they gay?
Secondly, genomes can mutate overtime due to outside influence. Correct? Could the genomes be influenced by the environment and behavior rather than vice versa?

Well it doesn't lead to reproduction so someone could argue it is a form of infertility. I always like the look on their faces when they try to come up with an answer to that question.
I agree that it is probably a normal variant or if you had to classify it as an illness that it is not a serious one and should be way way way down the list on things to get research $$$$.

This is what's confusing. How do you know if you're "one step closer" if you haven't found what you're looking for? You can only know that in hindsight.
This is what the D-bags say when they need more government grant $ so they don't have to find a real job.

The gay conversation will never be shut down. It is a dividing issue and political ppl will continue to use it as such. Civil Right Act has been law for over 50 years and AA's are still trying to say they are being discriminated against. As long as the winning strategy in politics is divide and conquer and ppl vote based on one social issue vs fiscal or foreign policy the converstaion will still exist.

If they can identify, could we also eventually correct the genetic anomaly?
Posted on 11/20/14 at 10:40 am to Green Chili Tiger
Is there a study that proves or disproves gay population concentrations through the centuries? The hypothesis is, the more dire the human condition is in terms of hunting and gathering the lower the concentration of gays in a population. Just wondering if there is an environmental element triggering or inhibiting hormones that could cause gayness.

My theory is that societies that have time and resources for oomphaloskepsis will ultimately engage in more oomphaloskepsis.

Can solve CF, Sicke Cell, and other diseases that actually kill ppl first?

Totally makes sense. (had to google that BTW)
