Uhhhh, what?
People who actually lift weights have no problem with the opening post and have discussed proper technique.
I could care less about what the little girly men who have never been in a gym before in their life have to say.

Anytime your workout will include explosive movements you shouldn't perform static stretches beforehand. It causes your muscles to lose elasticity (temporarily) and therefore reduce strength and explosiveness and increase risk of injury due to decreased muscle support at the joints.

Yep, very simple. Just warm up before you do any stretching to be safe. For example before lifting weights for legs I run on a tread mill or ride a bike for 10 minutes and then I stretch, then I lift weights, and then I stretch again. Time to go home.

Funny that this bothers anyone enough to cause them to make a post ranting about it. I never pay attention to how others are working out unless they're doing something really weird or making excessive noise. Then I pay attention for a couple minutes for the entertainment value.
My dumbbell and barbell bench reps only go down about half or just below - 2 shoulder surgeries in my life means i do what I want to stay safe and idgaf what some weirdo thinks who is checking me out rather than focusing on his workout.

Who said it bothered me? It was funny and that is why I posted it.

You have a busted up shoulders and have to do a workout to suit your injuries fine. Did it ever occur to you that people might be preforming exercises with incorrect form in the gym and yes, sometimes it is funny.
Get a life you loser gimp.

The problem is your assertion that it is incorrect form to not touch your chest when bench pressing. Just because that's what some bro told you in the gym doesn't mean it's correct.

Going down 20-50% is incorrect form for bench press. This is terrible form and does not really accomplish much of anything. Anybody who works out knows this. That is 100% correct. You too will look like an idiot in the gym preforming this ROM in front of other people.
You can make an argument about stopping 2 inches from your chest vs touching your chest. I have done both for years. Stopping 2 inches from your chest is easier and you can lift heavier weights with more reps vs touching your chest. Thus, this is why most people do not want to go all the way down because it is harder. Yes, bouncing is not only stupid but dangerous.

Non-powerlifters still bench? Who knew?

Regular bench (to your chest)is way more damaging to the shoulder joint. I have my shoulder patients make sure that when they work chest they never let elbows go behind shoulders as its unsafe.
So you tell your patients to cheat the excercise......are you a cross cult coach too??
Most shoulder injuries are because people lift way way to much weight and do not maintain proper speed and form. Dropping weight then bouncing weight back up is what hurts shoulders. The excercise doesnt IF done properly. It's been around since the beginning of time.

And clearly the poor kid in the OP was not doing it properly and his form was terrible and he looked hilarious.
He should have lowered the weight down to an amount in which he could properly control the weight with good form.

Agree with the second part; only partially agree with the first part. Yes, lots of people overdo it on how much they load the bar with, but the chief culprit in shoulder impingement vis-a-vis flat bench pressing is not retracting the scapula beforehand and if doing so, not keeping it retracted while lying down. There's also some evidence to suggest that even if that form is maintained strictly, flaring the elbows out away from the body reintroduces the forward motion of the shoulders slightly, thus increasing the likelihood of impingement.

Agreed that's proper form.
Posted on 11/20/14 at 6:23 pm to ctiger69
And agree totally. To much weight and lack of knowledge was his problem.

I'm not super strict on scapula retraction, but I'm aware of holding a good static form - I'm curious as to the "some evidence" because I find that flaring the elbows away from the body under weight, causes my shoulders to drop. Having said that - my shoulders are fairly wide for my frame on most benches have my shoulders mostly unsupported by the bench itself. I also try to maintain a fairly neutral angle of the elbows - not flared out (90) and not scraping the torso.
I had some minor shoulder impingement with incline and I don't do those anymore. Despite liking upright rows for years, I never had impingement problems - that is one exercise the risk just isn't worth the reward.

If you are going to get a pass on a rep in a meet, you actually have to touch and pause before attempting the lift. That will knock off a shite ton of weight if you don't train that way.

I doubt the guy was training for competitive lifting.
