Guys who don't touch their chest on the bench press

I saw another clown at the gym this morning. He is trying to bench about 185 lbs. He does about 8 reps but only goes down 50% of the way to his chest. Then he stacks on more weight to get to 225 lbs. He does 4 more reps but now he is going down about 20% of the way to his chest. He barely bends his elbows and then goes back up with the bar. He jumps up from the bench like a bad arse. I could not help to laugh.

Someone actually described this to me the other day as an effective way to increase your regular bench.

Bench press is stupid, period, no matter how you do it. *Unless you are a Powerlifter

Even if he was going down all the way, he's still pretty weak with that weight.
On a flip side, back in the day, power lifters would do these 'half reps' with more weight than they usually would on occasion. It was to get there body and joints adjusted more to the heavier weight and in the long run allow them to build up to it faster as their bodies would become more comfortable with it.
I doubt this is what this weakling was doing, but there is a reasoning behind such a technique.

Why do people think other people care what they saw at the gym?
It might have been amusing at the time, but nobody cares.

Threads like this are typically better with a pic or gif. See Crossfit threads.

Regular bench (to your chest)is way more damaging to the shoulder joint. I have my shoulder patients make sure that when they work chest they never let elbows go behind shoulders as its unsafe.

I disagree with this. For years I used to bring the bar to about 2-3 inches from my chest. One day I decided to go all the way down to my chest. I was shocked that I could only get 4 reps touching my chest compared to my normal 8 reps that I have been doing for months. It is much harder.

It is more difficult to maintain a hold and stop midway than to let the weight hit your chest.
Ever seen someone lay on the ground and do a bench press?
It literally prevents the bar from dropping down, you have to hold it up, this is very commonplace for increasing your bench.
Grats on being an uniformed prick

If you don't pause it's not a real rep. Touch and go's are not as bad as half reppers, but chest bounce heave guys may be worse.

Did not know. Thanks for the input.
