2014/15 are much better. Sure they try to sell you the paid version but what "free" program doesnt?
Its far superior to MSE on vista/W7 machines. Ive noticed you can have MSE on a W7 machine and it will find nothing, pull it off and install AVG and AVG picks up malware.
Really the bottom line is most people are fricking stupid and it doesnt matter what they use for antivirus they are still going to get some type of junk.
As for the apple fanboi, I would say the ratio of malware for Windows vs OSX is about the same as worldwide market share for the two. We see far too many Macs with some reskin of "optimizer pro" or some bullshite come in the shop to believe otherwise. Again, fact is, people are dumb and cant use their computers regardless of platform.

Webroot and have had no problems

This. Webroot is great, it is extremely lightweight (the installer fits on a floppy diskette. seriously. if you took a screenshot of the program and saved it as a png, it would be a larger filesize than the program itself), and their support is good. My company works with them and I have passed along info to their rep and within a week or so they added a new feature just based on my feedback alone.
Malwarebytes is great as well, but as said above, the free version is for cleaning up after you are already infected--it has no realtime monitoring.

Thanks to everyone for the replies. I will look into many of the suggestions here that I had never heard of.

Has AVG improved? Because many years ago I recall it being a nagging, intrusive resource hog.
This.

For prevention, Windows 8/8.1's native security is more than sufficient. And I am torrenting movies, music, games, and software constantly.
And this.

Eset and Malwarebytes Pro.

We've been using malwarebytes for quite a while now. Lately I've been using ESET's online scanner to clean a lot of customer's computers. Just the other day, I installed ESET Smart Security on a customer who was using MBAM Pro and MSSE...he was bringing his laptop in twice a month for infection. I'm waiting to see if the ESET does any better, but I have a feeling it's just a dumb user looking at gay porn.
