neighbors and I have an informal bartering system that's been going on for years. I swap them out summer garden stuff for their winter citrus and deer sausage.
Have read a few articles that claim bartering is becoming more and more popular in U.S. (example)
thoughts/opinions welcome
barter (definition)
1. exchange (goods or services) for other goods or services without using money.

I love the idea of bartering. The only time I've really used it is with my homebrewing... Being that you cannot sell the stuff, I have traded it for small things, but nothing of serious value.
Still, I love the idea of it.

me too. it's an awesome system once everything's been negotiated and people are happy with the terms of the trade

Thanks for including the definition. If you didn't think us morons knew the word, why didn't just use the word "trade" instead of being pretentious about it?

This thread is an IRS trap, isn't it?
Chicken is going to be served a subpoena to hand over user info and we're all going to federal p in the a prison for tax evasion.
eta: while the OP gets commissions for turning people in.
brilliant plan.

My husband does it all the time. He is the type of guy that can fix anything or do anything so people call him to do jobs for them or help them. Rather than charge them the going rate he just barters with them for stuff. He rounds up cattle with one friend and gets an orphan calf out of the deal. He always fixes an elderly guy's tractor so the guy gave him a mule (the 4 wheel kind, not the 4 legged kind).
Usually with older people or people he knows don't have money, he just fixes their stuff and tells them to cook him lunch or dinner while he works.

The term barter isn't pretentious. It's just a more precise way to describe the exchange that the OP is wanting to discuss.
Barter system never deals with money while "trade" often times include a cash/monetary incentive.

Was at the in-laws this past weekend and took picture of my father in laws boat house. He had just had led lights installed all around it and the walkway to it (these were not cheap lights!)I took a picture of it while there during sunset. Told father in law to tell the guy he could use it for his business if he gave him something in return. He used it and is giving him some more lighting and a remote that he can turn the lights on automatically on the boathouse when driving up on the boat.
