I was born not poor, but ended up poor at a young age. Graduated college, now a Commercial Insurance Broker with a global firm and make money that I never thought I'd see at my age.

My dad was born in a dirt floor shack in the middle of the woods, not long after he was born my grandpa inherited a small sum of money from a well off uncle. It was not a lot but enough to get them in a house and out of that shack. I grew up there and my dad still lives there today.
When I was growing up my dad worked in the oilfield. If any of you are old enough to remember how bad the 80s were to oilfield workers you will understand how I grew up. But in the early 90s after I graduated high school the oilfield picked back up and I went to work with my dad.
Now today I don't really have to worry about money, I'm not rich by no means but we live comfortable. Deep water toolpushers are worth more than their weight in gold.

I was born into privilege & married privilege
Raised hard working kids
I'd avoid looking down on people
you were privileged to have the incentive to bust arse

Quite a few successful people in this thread, despite having some pretty rough starts. Damn impressive to see people overcome obstacles.

It would hard to describe my upbringing as middle class - lower middle class perhaps, but not by much. Things certainly were never "easy" or "good."
I always had most of the things I needed growing up, but never had nice stuff. I was fortunate that my parents (mostly my mom) made sure that I could play sports and socialize some. I was also fortunate that I went to public school in a good school district and was smart enough to get college scholarships to pay for (some) school. Perseverance got me to my undergrad and graduate degrees.
I (alone) probably make close to double what my parents ever did together - and my wife makes more than I do. It certainly doesn't feel like it - but we've managed to make what we consider goofy money. Of course, we put in the time and work to get there.
I'm thankful that my little one won't see some of the hardships I had growing up.

I'm just tired of everyone thinking they are owed something... I don't understand that mentality. I wish we would go back to the mindset of "if you want something, then work hard to get it."
Its sickening all the people that sit at home and get paid because they had 7 kids. that is not a race issue.. I don't care if the people that sit at home are black, white, blue, or orange... they need a job...
I feel better now!
