Almost 28 months later: TDKR vs The Avengers revisited

It's pretty amazing that when these movies came out that they were seen as equals and some even preferred the avengers.
There's nothing really "wrong" with the avengers per se. It is what it is and doesn't try to be anything else. It's a fun popcorn movie and I still enjoy it, but it is just a surface level comic book movie with a rehashed villan from their standalone Thor effort. It's ultimately all sizzle and no steak.
TDKR, on the other hand, was maligned at the time largely because it tried to pack way too much into one movie. They should have just filmed an extra 40 minutes, flushed out a few of the themes and broke it into two a la harry potter. But, after watching it a handful of times it really opens up. It's an outstanding blend of 2 of Batman's greatest stories (Knightfall and The Dark Knight Returns) combined with classic Charles Dickens' novel "A Tale of Two Cities". It's not perfect by any stretch, and you can tell that having to follow the previous batman film really weighed on the production. But even so it's still eons better of a movie than the avengers.

The Avengers is a much better movie than The Dark Knight Rises. I saw DKR three times for whatever reason and liked it less and less each time. it looked like it was made with minimal effort from someone who was over making Batman movies. The Avengers was a beautifully shot movie that gave you everything you went to the theater to watch.

they are two very different films. its like comparing Happy Gilmore to Wedding Crashers. both comedies. both very good but for different reasons and in different ways. idk if you can put these 2 movies into a direct comparison.
also, avengers was the start of MCU major events and spawning their next phase. TDKR was the end of a trilogy. very different circumstances

Last part is spot on
Even with its many flaws its 100x better. The avengers is boring

Avengers is a fun movie, but I really don't see how anyone could argue its better or more well made than TDKR.

Is this a troll thread? TDKR is pure garbage. Terrible writing and acting. Even the Nolan fanboys have to admit the dialogue is cringeworthy.

You couldn't be more wrong.

I knew after that opening sentence that this was a semi-troll effort. I upvoted anyways.
Never watched Avengers, nor will I ever. TDKR was the worst of the trilogy but still a very solid movie.

my .02:(bait taken)
TDKR has the gimmicky villain that gets taken out by Anne Hathaway. The big twist is a dud. It also suffers from the same problem is predecessors suffered from: Christian Bale is a terrible Batman.
Avengers may have a rehashed villain but he's still a better character than what TDKR gives us. We also at the time got the feels for agent coulson dying. I would have applauded Christian bale biting it with the nuke, but nothing gives you the feels in TDKR. The dumb cops getting killed in the riot? That's just dumb, not touching and emotional.

Still do. TDKR has a whole lost of issues and is the weakest of the Baman trilogy, suffering from the disease which often afflicts long series... it's just way too overstuffed. It could stand to be a half hour shorter, and it unfortunately suffers in comparison to the truly brilliant Dark Knight, which has a strong case for best superhero movie ever.
Avengers manages to balance having multiple lead characters and a complicated backstory, yet not feel nearly as bloated. It's a great piece of storytelling.

I love Batman and the Nolan films but TDKR was a huge drop in quality. So many eye rolling scenes (Blake knowing Bruce is Batman, Batman charging headfirst into Bain's lair without any kind of plan, Talia's reveal/motivations/death). It gets worse and worse with every rewatch.
There are some good things, I like that the choices made by Gordon and Alfred in TDK have consequences in TDKR. Scarecrow's cameo. Tom Hardy and his eyes give a great performance as Bane, even as his character is completely neutered by the horrible, horrible Talia reveal. Boring characters like Matthew Modine and Blake take up way too much time.
I think Nolan had a plan for the third film that went completely in the trash when Heath Ledger died.

As a written story, TDKR was one of the worst major movies in the last decade. It fails on multiple levels that have been rehashed over and over on here.

Both suck. IM3 is the GOAT. Now you all go back to sucking some dicks. Suck them long and suck them hard.

TDKR massive issues:
Why the frick did every single cop in the city march into the sewers at the same time?
It took Bruce years of walking with a Cane to remember he had a knee snap device in his basement that easily fixed his issues?
It took hanging on a rope for a month to completely heal a broken back enough to jump and free fall twice with only a rope attached to his back which snapped when he fell?
Everyone just figures out he's Bruce Wayne without much of a problem?
He gave the bat cave to some pussy untested rookie cop with no fight experience and no training?
Why didn't Nolan just kill him?
The terrible background extras in the movie.
The complete and total castration and emasculation or Bane first by Talia then by Catwoman. Got that scene was terrible.
And the stupid frick you at the end of the movie where not only is Bruce alive, but then Alfred, life long mentor, Guardian, parent, father figure, Butler, friend sees his adopted son who he believed was dead and just gets up and leaves.
