If I'm running WatchESPN app on my laptop or ipad can I throw that up on the big TV with this device? How does it connect to the laptop/ipad?
I don't think you will need a laptop/ipad to use the stick. The apps will be on the stick and run from it. If you are using an app that is not on the stick, then you can mirror your phone/tablet onto the tv.
I think where this fits in best is when you don't have a smart tv with lots of apps. Buy a cheap tv for outside, or the spare room and not have to run a cable to it.
I give Dish Network a year before they are integrated into a stick device. They already have apps for some LG tvs and I either PS3 or PS4.

You can stream a bunch of stuff, just like the roku, apple tv, fire tv, etc. It is a device that doesn't need an app to run; however, it did mention that

Fire TV Stick lets you fling your favorite apps to your TV to free up your small screen for other uses. Or mirror your phone or tablet to your TV.
So we really don't know how good or bad it will be just yet. But for $20, its not that big of a risk hahaha

What did you think you were buying?
Can I have $20?

There are quite a few movie and music apps it supports.
Games too:
In addition to that you can "fling" stuff from your mobile to the screen. It's unclear what flinging is supported by non Amazon Fire devices.

Second Screen, enhanced with X-Ray
Click the “fling” icon on your Fire phone or tablet to send video and audio to your big screen, leaving you free to use your Amazon mobile device for other tasks. With Second Screen, learn more about TV shows and movies playing on Fire TV Stick with Amazon-exclusive X-Ray, powered by IMDb. Dive deep in-scene to explore characters, trivia, music, and more. When you’re done watching, simply bring everything back to your tablet with a touch.
Fire TV Stick also supports standards like DIAL so you can also fling services like YouTube, Spotify, and coming soon, Netflix, from your Android phone or iPhone.
Mirror your tablet or phone on your HDTV
Share whatever is on your screen, including movies, TV shows, music, and photos from your compatible tablet or phone with everyone in your living room using display mirroring. What you see on your Fire OS or Android device is exactly what you’ll see on your big screen, including support for devices from Motorola, Samsung, LG, and Google without any additional apps or software.

I got caught up in the urgency and pulled the trigger
Anyway I see some apps I'll definitely use this with. Can you use any laptop or does it have to be a kindle? (nm I see you answered this in your post)

My fire TV sticks get delivered tomorrow. I think I'll have to open it up and play with but likely gift the other.

If you have HBO, can't you get all of the same stuff via HBO on demand? I have never used HBOgo while not on a computer, smartphone, or tablet because its not necessary.

You're assuming that everyone that uses HBO Go has a subscription to HBO which is obviously not the case.

Indeed, sir. So his only complaint is that he is too poor to afford cable. Got it. (Just kidding, I only have HBO because it was free for a year hahaha)

I prefer to phrase it as financially efficient. My mom got HBO locked in for 2 years so I cancelled mine and use her password now.

mIne just came in minutes ago. I dunno if I'm even going to open it and save it for a stocking stuffer. I thought I had ordered 2 at the same time, but I guess not I think the second one is scheduled for January.

So, this allows you to avoid buying a "Smart TV"? If you can find a non-smart tv, you can spend extra on size and just have this $20 add-on?
This sound right?
