I did both hana and Haleakula and they were both fun. yes Hana is one you have to literally pay attention every second or you will die but its got lots of cool water falls and places to stop along road. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

Haleakala wasn't bad at all aside from the fact we got up at 3:30 am to make the trip to beat the sunrise.

Very worth it. Been twice, thankfully. Stayed in Kihei and had a blast. Molokini, Road to Hana, drove all over. I'd suggest finding the hike of the 4 waterfalls, it'll make the trip that much better

Maui is soooo badass. I want to go back soon. The snorkling is the shite.

Been twice. First time was Jan 2008 during the peak of whale season. Very cool. Got probably within 10-20 yds of a couple whales. Did snorkeling, sunset cruise, and Road to Hana that trip, with a lot of R&R at Westin Ka'anapali in Lahaina. Second time was July 2012. We explored more stuff off the road to Hana and was well worth it...be prepared to spend all day just for that trip. We left around 8am and didn't get back to our resort until 9pm or so, and there are no lights on the road heading back to the city. Also did the sunrise on top of Mt Haleakala...it's cool, but 2-2.5 hrs of driving for 5-10 min of watching the sunrise was questionable. I do, however, regret not biking down that mountain/volcano.

Restaurants that I remember going to and recommend...

Sansei in Kapalau - some of the best sushi and soups I've tasted
Paia Fish Market
Milagros Food Co
Lahaina Pizza Co - get the Sweet Pig deep dish. fanfrickingtastic

We stayed at the Maui Sheraton on kaanapali beach for 5 days (and then Waikiki Sheraton for 5 days). i would definitely go back to Maui. Very laid back, and yes all you see are convertible mustangs. There are no skyscraper hotels, they all max out at around 4-6 stories and are sprawled out. Go into Lahaina for shops and food. We went to the Old Lahaina Luau for the experience, but I dont think luaus are worth the money. We also biked down Mt Haleakala. very cool. Nothing but switchbacks and awesome views.

road to Hana. I hated this...it's very windy and you have to pay attention to the road or you will crash.

That's kind of the idea, but the views are worth it. The road was scary with my dad driving because he is very heavy on the break at the last minute. My brother and I were flung around in the back seat constantly

I drove the way back and made sure to down shift. The only problems I had were locals passing on the narrow bridges.

I was stationed in Hi while in the Marines. I equally enjoyed Maui and Kauai the most. A lot to do and see on both islands and the locals are as friendly as you will ever find anywhere.

Maui is paradise. I don't understand why every rich person doesn't retire there

I've always thought I'd feel really confined living somewhere, no matter how nice it is, that would take a 5+ hour flight to get anywhere else. But, maybe that's just me.

Yeah me too. But apples and oranges really. 5k luxury versus 15k luxury. And water quality in Tahiti is much better. But it's really not accessible to most people like Hawaii is.

I've stayed at Maui Hyatt and Kauai Grand Hyatt (going back this Summer). Both are great but Kauai is the best. Look at the website and the golf course is the main page- You can walk from the resort along those cliffs to a pristine private beach. I love it there.

The Poipu Bay Golf Course is backed by lush emerald mountains and sculpted from a rolling plateau eight stories above the expansive blue waters of the Pacific Ocean. Even the most focused golfer will be challenged by breathtaking views from each and every hole. Nestled among the gentle contours of Poipu Bay, you'll discover the remains of Hawaiian heiau (places of worship) and ancient stone walls. If this weren't challenge enough, Poipu Bay's nature presents one distraction after another, from native Nene geese and rare Hawaiian monk seals to green sea turtles and humpback whales. You'll have lots of excuses to back your scorecard.
