I agree on the death penalty. Not on life sentences.

Funny... I don't remember in any of the Gospels when one of the thieves asked for (and obtained) Jesus' forgiveness that Jesus turned to the centurions and said "he's been forgiven, you can let him down now."

That's fine....I wonder why the pope doesn't change the language in the catechism then?

Sort of agree on both points.
I will say this though, there are people that should NEVER see the outside of a prison.
What I'd replace the death penalty with is hard labor.
If you can kill someone, you can work the rest of your life banging bricks or some other bullshite that kills you slowly.

quote:
All Christians and men of good will are called today to fight not just for the abolition of the death penalty in all its forms, whether it be legal or illegal, but also the goal of improving prison conditions, out of respect of the human dignity of people deprived of their freedom," the pope said during a meeting with the International Association of Penal Law.
not an authoritative statement.
Not that I disagree but if you look at Catholic theologians you will see them say that he is speaking on his own personal opinion not speaking with Authority.
Even though if the Pope says something on faith and morals and you are Catholic you should listen to him.

Sounds a lot like most Popes.

Francis’ speech reaffirmed the Catholic church’s long-held position on the death penalty.
there are many in the tradition of the Church who say that the Death Penalty is allowable in extreme cases, some will also argue that justice will call for capital punishment.

Because Jesus knew that the Messiah thing was a fraud. Shame on God for putting the kid in that position.

This is straight from the Catholic Catechism.
quote:
2267 Assuming that the guilty party’s identity and responsibility have been fully determined, the traditional teaching of the Church does not exclude recourse to the death penalty, if this is the only possible way of effectively defending human lives against the unjust aggressor. (2306)

i`m as conservative as you can get for the most part but this is one area that i`m on the fence about only because if one person that is executed that is innocent it is deplorable and we have seen ever so often people that get cleared of a crime after spending years in prison.

a Christian leader advocating for mercy. Whodathunkit!?

Death penalty is an appropriate and just punishment for the ultimate and most unforgivable crime there is. If you take a life with evil intent, you deserve to lose yours in return.
He's out of his mind on life sentences. There are people who are too dangerous and evil to be allowed to walk as a free man ever again.

Agreed. The DP is great in theory.
But I'm opposed to it bc I do not think it's great in practice (like many other government functions).

I agree 100%! It is a select certain few who get the death penalty as well and with DNA evidence underlying things now, there is little to argue in most all cases. I simply don't understand the hubris one would have to think they can go out and end someone else's life and not have the same punishment enacted upon them in a much more humane manner with an opportunity to defend themselves in the legal system to boot. Some sub-human acting bastards simply get what is coming to them via the death penalty.

This isn't a new Catholic stance, is it? It's been a major conflict in my Faith for a while.

Yeah, It's really not a surprise that the death penalty has a hard time being implemented in this country with the laws we have and the burden of proof the gov't has. Is that for the best? Sure.
