PFF Stats of Saints, Game #5

I'm actually somewhat encouraged by these stats.
Sure, Tampa's not a great team; but it's nice to see some players in green.
OFFENSE
-Thomas is playing at a very high level. His substitute, Cadet, is mediocre. So why do see so much Cadet, when Thomas is so much better? I'm guessing it's a question of endurance, as Thomas started to slow at the back end of last season. I'm not sure that Cadet needs to be THIS involved though.
-Armstead put in a performance reminiscent of his really impressive rookie year. I want to see more of this.
-This pass blocking, -9.7, isn't gonna cut it. No way, no how. I don't blame Strief too much, since he's generally on the ball. But we're paying Grubbs and Evans a shite ton to get Brees pressure in his face every game.
-Somehow, Brees didn't end up in the red this game. 62 passes is fricking absurd though, especially considering we were winning for a large portion of the game.
-Let's take a look at Brees' performance yesterday under pressure:
The pass protection MUST improve. Evans might be injured still. Maybe Lelito can take his place for a while.
-Robinson, Thomas, Ingram. All very talented. All very bored on the bench.
-Josh Hill is someone who seems to always find himself in the green.
-It's really concerning when the best receiving grades go to a tailback and a backup TE.
-Both Centers are struggling a little bit. I still think Lelito is the one to roll with though.
-There's nothing to add about Colston.
DEFENSE
-Easily the best scores for the defense all season.
-Haralson is having himself a quietly great season. Very good FA acquisition.
-Patrick Robinson...who is this guy? Which Robinson is the real one? The Green Robinson or the Red Robinson? Time will tell.
-Foster generated some pass rush, and even Hicks got back in the green. Encouraging.
-What's not encouraging is that Galette and Jordan failed to make much of an impact in the pass rush game again. We need the whole DL getting to the QB if we're gonna bring him down.
-Vaccaro's coverage score is lower than I'd hoped. Still, I have hope for him.
-Humber, Lofton, and Hawthorne. Can't seem to plug anybody good into the middle of the second level.
-Lewis and White had not so great games, particularly White. It's really hard to tell with White. At the very least, he's wildly inconsistent.
-Brian Dixon with the positive coverage score. It would be pretty exciting if this dude turned out to have ball skills.

thx for the info man - i didnt get to watch any of the games due to it being my 1 year wedding anniversarry, and was out with the wife.
i think Brees's protection (or lack there-of) is my biggest concern.

On the season, PFF cumulatively scores our run blocking a +14.6 and our pass blocking a -12.0.
You'd think a team with that kind of blocking would put the focus on running.
Lol no.

Having plays for Cadet when I know Thomas can execute them exponentially better drives me insane. We hardly use him yet he's probably a top three players on our offense.

cam jordan, hawthore, lofton, galette and usually hicks can all eat a big bag of dicks.

PFF notes:
-Patrick Robinson spent Sunday manning the slot for the first time in his entire career. The former first round pick looked like a natural in his 26 snaps allowing a single catch for nine yards on three targets with an interception and a pass breakup. Robinson certainly played well enough to retake his old spot, but with the results he produced it might be wise to continue to get him snaps in the slot.
So, is Prob better suited for the slot?
-The complement to McCoy’s monster day is unfortunately the former all-pro right guard. Evans was powerless against the defensive tackle’s array of pass rushing moves. Of Evans seven pressures allowed, two came within two seconds of the snap. You can’t chalk it all up to McCoy, though. Evans worst pass blocking attempt came on Clinton McDonald with 10:19 left in the fourth quarter when a simple swim move put McDonald into Drew Brees’ lap.
Signature Stat: Evans now has the third worst pass blocking efficiency of all guards.
-Thomas averaged 4.25 yards after contact and broke six tackles for an elusive rating of 212.5. His performance is all the more impressive when you consider he played just one third of the Saints 93 offensive snaps in the game. Thomas won the game ball, as well.
-It was a nearly flawless day for game ball recipient Pierre Thomas who had his highest grade since Week 2 of the 2012 season.

Our defensive line is so frustrating. Especially Jordan and Galette.

Good game for Bush I thought. Vaccaro also helped out on some run stops yesterday and kind of looked like he did last year.
if Vaccaro can get back to making a few more plays in run support that would be cool.

As for defense, I really saw some improvement on the back end. Vaccaro was his usual self finally and Robinson looked really good in the slot. Bush held his own, too. Turnovers on offense put them in a bind a lot of the time. Improvement is still needed.
The d-line was not good yesterday, but there were some individual things that were better. John Jenkins getting play time made a difference. On multiple plays, his size and strength helped cave in the pocket. Unfortunately, Jordan has offered nothing in the pass rush department and Junior is struggling. I'd love to see Tyrunn Walker play next to Jenkins because he has been our best interior rusher this year.
I also want to applaud Rob Ryan for that defensive call on the safety where Junior stunted and beat the guard inside for the sack. That's the kind of creativity needed to manufacture sacks, especially when guys aren't winning one-on-one.
Linebackers still make me want to cry.

They should post in the locker room some where the stats that haralson and foster are the only two who graded out positive in the pass rush

Good to see Hicks in the green

People forget Robinson is coming off an ACL and for some players and most normal human beings it takes up to 2 years to get fully back to 100% after that type of injury.
That is only magnified when a player like a CB is required to plant and cut most of the time in response to another player. He has the talent, but God knows what his mental state about his knee are right now.
