Got charged with a felony and they took a week and a half to set my bond for some reason. Fun times
Oh yeah, after I got out, the charges were dropped

Very sad bump: the young man committed suicide.

Last Monday, Prestia, who had filed a lawsuit on Browder’s behalf against the city, noticed that Browder had put up a couple of odd posts on Facebook. When Prestia sent him a text message, asking what was going on, Browder insisted he was O.K. “Are you sure everything is cool?” Prestia wrote. Browder replied: “Yea I’m alright thanks man.” The two spoke on Wednesday, and Browder did seem fine. On Saturday afternoon, Prestia got a call from Browder’s mother: he had committed suicide.

Wow that is an awful story. I didn't notice this was a bump so when I read your post, it shocked me.

Yeah, no 8th Amendment violation here?

Damn just read the article you posted. Simply heartbreaking. Although I did squirm a bit when I read the quote "this is bigger than Michael brown." What family member thinks to say that the night of the suicide? That would be the last thought in my mind comparing it to another scenario.

NYC gives zero fricks about "your rights", yet it is held up as a bright, shining liberal star.
Low crime at the expense of effing you over, especially if you are a minority.

Really fricked up that the 6th amendment has been thrown out. Is the prosecutor going to face charges for denying him his right?
I doubt the prosecutor will face anything, the other defendant in the case when home after arraignment, Browder was on probation, is why he had a bond. As far as the 6th amendment did his attorney raise this issue at all?

Browder had already had a few run-ins with the police, including an incident eight months earlier, when an officer reported seeing him take a delivery truck for a joyride and crash into a parked car. Browder was charged with grand larceny. He told me that his friends drove the truck and that he had only watched, but he figured that he had no defense, and so he pleaded guilty. The judge gave him probation and “youthful offender” status, which insured that he wouldn’t have a criminal record.
Sounds like his three years was the legal version of a referee's "make up call."

IIRC LA has more people incarcerated per capita with a higher crime rate than NYC, though I don't have any stats to back tha to up at the moment.

Still wrong.

The blame is not completely on the prosecutors with these types of issues. Judges and defense attorneys can be just as much to blame if not more as explained below.
Just like its always easy to blame the cops for issues without looking at the whole story, this problem is the same.
quote:
The problem is compounded by defense attorneys who drag out cases to improve their odds of winning, judges who permit endless adjournments, prosecutors who are perpetually unprepared
Also, having 5,965 felonies to prosecute in one year is a serious backlog on the courts. The shame is that the state allows this one court to have a backlog that big and not bring in help with more judges and lawyers.

A better comparison is NYC to NO and yes, you're correct (re: murder rate for sure). Who knows though, b/c NYPD cooks the books on crime pretty regularly.
NYC bans guns and aggressively uses "stop and frisk". Those policies are allowed b/c the rich think this reduces crime. They don't fear stop and frisk b/c they are moneyed and they have jobs.
If someone gets locked up for a few years with no charges filed or on occasion a suit-wearing black guy gets mistakenly detained, oh well, that's the cost of a safe city.
