I have never watched any of the other seasons, but this new one seems interesting to me. To understand it, will I have to be up to date on all the seasons before, or is each season a different plot line?

Each season is different with new characters and storyline. Many of the actors are the same tho.
Highly recommend first season. Good stuff

First season was great. Didn't like other 2. Hopefully they'll rebound this season.

Season one is good, Asylum is okay, third season is meh.
This one looks really good though.

No, but go back and watch Season 1, by far the best out of the 3 so far.
You also might want to check out Season 2, as it sounds like some of the characters in Season 4 are in Season 2, which will show how they got to the Asylum

Yes.

First season was awesome. The others started out great, had some really good ideas, then just got lost mid-season. I think this is a trait exhibited by many Ryan Murphy projects. He must have ADD.

Particularly season two, in my opinion. Asylum had a chance to be truly great but the whole aliens things killed a lot of it for me.

Season 3 was shite from the start IMO

I still need to watch S1, but am busy with other shows for now. I will say that I tried to jump in and watch S3 live last year, and it was some of the worst television I've ever witnessed. It was laughably horrible.

All of this. The icing on the cake was the musical intro to the season finale

Season 1 is amazing for sure. Season 2 had some wild downright scary religious stuff but the plot was all over the place. Season 3 was not good at all. The witch stuff in season 3 could have been awesome being set in NO but it never panned out like I thought it could have. Hopefully, the upcoming season will get back in line with 1&2. As mentioned, you don't have to watch any of it before but I would watch seasons 1 and 2 to get a feel on how they use the actors as different characters.

At least we get this one back for season 4

I feel like they tried to intentionally make S3 fun and light but while doing so, they made some unintentionally terrible decisions.

s3 was like a chick show on upn, that happened to have gorey violence. It was terrible.
I wish they would stay away from the camp, and actually try to make a SCARY show. The Freakshow could be a great backdrop for some scary stuff, though i'm sure Murphy will turn in into some more gay rights propaganda

I think you're pretty much spot on right there. Season 2 had some great moments but fell just short of how good it could have been. Even Season 3 had potential, but they totally missed the mark. It's like AHS Coven was tailor made only for the Dancing with the Stars/America's Top Model female demographic. It was just so corny for the most part.

Season 1 was some truly great television.
I enjoyed S2, but that's because the jumping around really didn't bother me. Sister Mary Eunice was about as spot on as you could be, and I'm still bamboozled as to how Lily Rabe didn't win an Emmy for that performance. frick the aliens, though.
Season 3 was painful to watch. I actually rewatched Season 1 mid Season 3 just to remember why I was watching it.

I really liked Carnivale, so I may give it a shot. But it will be on a VERY short leash for me.

I second this one...
I have to say one thing though, from the previews, Sarah Paulson as the two headed woman looks stupid...

It's definitely WTF, but I'll give it a chance.
