That would decrease pitchers throwing at hitters

And increase batters wearing armor so they can lean in. Just imagine what Biggio coulda done with this rule.

That rule by itself would have exact opposite effect that it would be intended to have. Pitchers would be terrified to throw anywhere near the inside for fear that the batter would be able to lean into one. And they would try. Hell, they would be tought to lean into a close one and take a hit off of the shoulder. Why should the batter be awarded the equivalent of a double if they take one off of the shoe?
I could maybe see it working though if the extra base were only to be awarded if the batter was struck in the head or helmet area. No batter is going to be suicidal enough to lean their head into a pitch. Just in case though you can make it an immediate ejection and possible suspension and fine if the umpire suspects you of doing that. I have no problem with pitchers having extra motivation to make sure that a pitch never gets close to high and inside enough to hit the batter in the head. I understand that sometimes a pitch can just get away from you, but that doesn't mean that the consequences for hitting a guy like that shouldn't be more severe. It would never happen of course, but I think something like that could work.

You really think it makes a difference to pitchers whether the guy ends up on first or second? Most times when a player is hit intentionally, it is a retaliatory act regardless of the score and game situation. By the way, not only are hitters technically not allowed to "lean into one", the rule states that the batter is required to attempt to avoid being hit. Maybe MLB should enforce both rules and see what happens.

Uhhhh yeah.... One is in scoring position and the other isn't. When a player goes to second it also takes out a double play possibility.
You're statement is close to as dumb as OP
