I don't profess to know more than Chavis or whether the blame is equally on the DL. But it does seem that our LBs are not good. They don't seem strong, don't seem to get off blocks, and dont seem productive. I like the idea of fast LBs but I don't know if ours are good.

Give me kwon/Beckwith/garret. Unleash them and see what they do. If they want to redshirt CG, then play jones.

I don't key in on Welter every play but when I do look for him he is always blocked out of the play.

This. I really don't believe he is D1 talent. He had one other offer I believe and that was from Northwestern. Compared to other MLB's in this conference it doesn't seem he is at the same level. If Beckwith is capable of making the calls then Beckwith seems would be the better player. Bigger, stronger, faster.

I initially thought that he might be getting excessive bashing, but watched him on the replay last night and he is pretty bad. Reminds me of years ago when we used to wonder why Hookfin was playing in the defensive backfield. I know we had some bad performances on defense all around, but I think we were all hoping he had gotten better.

Another thing is we keep hearing how Welter is in there because of his knowledge of the defense (alignment, coverages, etc.). And how certain 2 year players are not ready because they need to be coached up (Herron, Beckwith). My thoughts are either Chief's system is really hard and they can't grasp it, or they are not being coached very well. I'm starting to think the latter.

I feel one of the problems is that majority of our linebackers are also the size of heavy safeties.

Add that with declining dline play.
You get 300+ lb. men blocking 230-220 lb. linebackers.

He didn't know when he bit on that fake on the first Wisconsin touchdown.

DL has to occupy the blockers better, which will allow the LBs to make more plays. I remember Ray Lewis begging for some DT help when the Ravens lost Sam Adams and Tony Saragussa(sp). When the Raven drafted Haloti Nagta(sp), Ray was able to make more plays.

We need to get Feist and Debo into the rotation, and hurry up and get Garrett up to speed.

Kwon was a beast against Wisconsin... He was all over the field. The other 2 LBs seemed to just be roll players and not play makers. I'm not saying they played bad, but they just didn't make plays like Kwon did.

the fact that welter is the starter at the most important position on D tells you everything we need to know.

Kwon was very average in the first half. He did step it up in the second, though..

I read on the advocate that Godchaux was now moved up to 2nd on the depth chart behind LaCouture and Clark was second behind Hunter. I think that if Bain, Herron, or hopefully Gilmore can provide another great rotational player, we can be good. At first I thought Valentine would transfer because of the time he missed, but if he is practicing now, and we don't have great starter by Auburn, hopefully he is cleared so he can play.

chavis insist on playing a ton of nickel. that hurts against the run. lb play is needs to be upgraded. better dt play would help but thats not the major problem. lb play is just off.

Great news about Valentine. Thanks.

How many tackles did Welter have. How many did Beckwith have?

Been the case every year. We need the Kelvin Sheppard, Kevin Minter to emerge. Welter isn't a bad player, but he's just not on either of those two level. Kwon, with another above average LB and we'd be very tough.

I just thought with Chavis coaching the Lbs personally we would be ok, but it clearly hasn't been the case. Wisconsin linebackers who aren't more athletic than ours were in the backfield making plays. This shows its a mentality that's needed more than anything.
