Shigeru Miyamoto has some harsh words for casual gamers

"[These are] the sort of people who, for example, might want to watch a movie. They might want to go to Disneyland. Their attitude is, 'okay, I am the customer. You are supposed to entertain me.' It's kind of a passive attitude they're taking, and to me it's kind of a pathetic thing. They do not know how interesting it is if you move one step further and try to challenge yourself [with more advanced games]. Fortunately, because of the spread of smart devices, people take games for granted now. It's a good thing for us, because we do not have to worry about making games something that are relevant to general people's daily lives." -Shigeru Miyamoto

Don't most casual gamers play the games he made?

They aren't all that harsh in reality, but you know he's referencing the people who play call of duty and madden and all those other games that are just the same shite over and over again.
But he really is right. People who just exclusively play the blockbuster titles like mentioned above and just the multiplayer are not gamers at all. They are sheep to companies like EA that provide instant gratification to the said buyer of the game.

If he's making games while worrying about casuals, he shouldn't be making games. He knows who he's making games for and who he's not. Who cares if there are casual gamers? It's still money in his pocket so his whining is pathetic. Who cares who's playing the game as long as it's being played and you're getting paid.

miyamoto has a niche just like activision has a niche with the call of duty bullshite.
gaming is a hobby. who gives a frick how others enjoy it?
if you like mindless shooters, play them.
if you like adventure games where you play as a kid wearing a green tunic with elf ears, play them.
miyamoto needs to pull the stick out of his arse.
if I had an axe to grind about modern gaming, it would be development costs causing a dearth of innovation with regard to game design. but yeah, mobile games are murdering the industry... sure thing...

No he's not at all.
He's talking about the people who play Wii Sports and Wii Fit, while not trying more advanced games after that. People who ignore how good a game, and just refuse to play it.
If you want to target a userbase or group with his statements, it's the casual userbase that made the Wii a success. They're currently spending their money on smartphones, tablets, and browser games.
Edit: Why don't you source the actual interview and article? It's far more interesting than the small snippet you posted. LINK
Another take on it is that Miyamoto is butthurt that the casual audience left him and the Wii U completely despite making very similar games available for Wii U.

Nope. Don't pretend to be superior based on the type of games you play. The gaming industry as you know it would not exist without the blockbuster titles.

I think that's the underlying emotion behind it. The lament here is how you please no one by trying to please everyone. The Wii was an appealing option for casual gamers. But today, you can either try to compete for the tablet gamer market or the XBox/PS4/PC market, and damned if Mary-Sue Casual wants to get off her fricking iPad.

Thanks. A couple of the earlier post had me wondering if I was going crazy.

The money they spend on those blockbusters gives companies revenue to try other things so IDC what they do as long as it's good for gaming in some way.

FourThreeForty doesn't like something so he's going to shite on it. That's his fricking opinion and it's gay and he's a loser.

His words may have not been as harsh either since there is a language barrier. I'm willing to guess this was translated from Japanese. I've never actually heard him speak English.
As for the call of duty complaining, cod money is funding destiny currently. That's how it works.

I've said for years this is nintendo's attitude towards all gamers
With the exception of TP they don't make games based on consumer demand...they know what the consumer wants better than he/she does...and I like that

So basically Mario, Mario Kart, Zelda, DK, Mario Party and Smash?
People play the games they like, doesn't matter if they played them a thousand times before.
Also if you like Miyamoto you should get this months issue of EDGE, it's a huge blowout on Nintendo and very informative. Pretty sure your original quote is from it
