The problem of diversity is becoming more difficult here as more and more teachers from outside of the neighborhood and the city take local teaching jobs.
So different people of different races from different areas is causing a lack of diversity?
Do these people ever stop and listen to themselves speak?

N.O. schools were the worst in America Pre K. The school board was just a bunch of corrupt racist assholes who were not qualified to stock shelves at Walmart.
Most people, including many blacks realize how much better N.O. schools are. You still have a few dumbasses like this person and their parents who want their blackness back, but things are good and getting better every day.

Students do need diverse educational experiences, but that diversity doesn’t need to be about a teacher’s race.
So sad.

I think this guy missed his own message by injecting race. It sounds like he wants to recruit teachers within the area rather than teachers from outside NOLA because they may be able to give additional education not taught from a book. Although a history teacher can give more of a cultural education than, say, a math teacher (I guess those classes will be reserved for whitey since everybody hates math anyway).

Why on earth would the Washington Post give this kid this big a platform?

Because it attracts publicity.
Never let a good crisis go to waste, remember?

I think anytime somebody demands diversity now, it really is just a code word for "moar blacks."
I'm pretty sure he would be just as outraged if the ethnic composition were 25% anglo, 25% hispanic, 25% asian, and 25% black.
All black = diverse now.

Well, he essentially said that none of the black kids respected any of the white teachers because they were "outsiders"

Best comment I saw:

Sorry to whomever wrote this essay. Teachers get hired who want the job and who are competent to teach. Students need to prepare themselves for a diverse situation because that is what they are going to confront in life. You aren't going to get coddled in life by people who understand you want want to connect with you. You have to understand many different types of cultures in this nation to get by. Suck it up and get used to it and try to learn. You will be better for it.

I work with a guy who started out in education.
Said his first day on the job with his own class, a kid was acting up and after the 2nd warning he told him to go to the principals office. The kid's response was "I'm gonna tell my mamma you call me a n****r." He said 6 or 7 other kids were like "yep, I heard it too! You in trouble now!"
The guy said he immediately realized he needed a career change. I'm sure it didn't help that teachers started becoming political targets right about the same time.
This was in North Baton Rouge.

They want diversity, well wouldn't having whitey teaching in a predominantly black school be diverse? They want minorities? well isn't a white person in the city of New Orleans a minority? isn't a white teacher in a predominately black school a minority?

wrong minority.
I bet a transgendered black female lesbian teacher from the Dominican would be just right.

They weren't happy with that, either. And in those days, ALL their teachers were black.

Maybe they should make one of these charter schools a "blacks only" school with a complete freeze on hiring whites. Only local blacks. Then see how it goes.

This student doesn't represent the kids my brother teaches.

The narrative I am seeing from the 'black community' is just that, separate, but not equal, as they are pushing for control of 'their world' and whites are not to be included. It seems after the struggles of the 60's it has come to, not only being on equal ground, but instead, being the lead player in all parts of society.
This narrative I have heard from my early years and was dumb founded at its premise, but as time goes on and our world changes, racially this is more and more becoming what is the reality. If you do not want to believe then that is up to you as an individual. I do not know your experience in this country as far as diversity of places lived.
The statements I heard were from fellow school mates in the late 60's. They kind of laughed about it but meant what they were saying. The objective was to out populate the whites and take over. I am only on this earth for a short while and for my lifetime it does not matter so much. But as a society in the long run it will matter much. Martin Luther King spoke of equality and I believe this is what we should aspire to.
The more things change the more they revert back to old ways and division of our people. All races need to work and strive to be people together not separated by who is the majority and who is the minority. Putting mathematical limitations on what we are as people is a hindrance to us fulfilling our potential as a nation.
