Sounds like he actually died of overhydration. Drank too much gatorade and it caused swelling on his brain.
My goodness a parent should never have to bury a child.

I was at that game, but we left early. So sad to hear.

Is this common?

Hurts my heart to hear this, I was a graduate of Prep myself. I had heard it was 3 pedialyte's he drank very quickly before the game.
Wow. The fact that only 3 could do that to a strapping young lad is crazy.

are they sure that's what got him?

That's what I've heard from some pretty good sources and everyone close to the school has also said over hydration. However I don't think they are 100% sure. The MRI just showed brain swelling. Also a news source stated the EMT staff was not consulted on the field and that Wilbanks was rushed to the hospital via a private vehicle.

We used to drink them on gameday, at least one throughout the day or possibly two. Definitely not last minute or all at once.

That seems crazy to me
I can drink 3 easily and I'm not a big guy

how much pedalyte or gatorade must one drink before he dies? i dont understand

quote:That makes no sense. I could see too much water causing over-hydration and hyponatremia causing even more brain swelling but not with a drink with high sodium and potassium content.

Drinking too much Pedialyte or Gatorade would not result in cerebral edema.
Water intoxication and cerebral edema occurs when the electrolyte levels are diluted to the point where the water moves into the tissue.
Those two drinks have sufficient electrolytes to counter that.
Also, it requires intense exercise with excess water consumption and complete lack if electrolyte replacement. There is another cause for this kid's death, not Pedialyte or Gatorade.

It's very normal for teams to give it out a couple of hours before a game. But 3? No way should he have been allowed to do that.
Once before the game and one during halftime is about right

You're freaking me out, Scruff. All I drink is water for my workouts.

You'll be fine.

Drinking 3 of the big bottles of pedialyte would give you a hella belly wash, but idk about death.

quote:So water intoxication is possible and likely, but like I said, Pedialyte and Gatorade wouldn't cause that. They are both high in sodium.

Seems like kid exercised too heavily and didn't replenish electrolytes.
Sad story.
